Advent calendar - alternatives to sweets

For our children we have a wooden advent calendar with 24 small drawers. The children take turns with the opening of the drawers and there is always something for everyone in the drawer: Eg: 4 chewy candies, chocolate chips, chocolate bars, etc. You know that for sure.

But at least twice a week, lies a note in it, with a small self-painted picture / Kritzelzeichung (depending on ability) of me, representing a surprise:

  • bake cookies
  • read a (new) book by candlelight
  • to go swimming
  • Game night / -afternoon
  • craft action
  • Etc.

Larger children can of course get a written note, but as long as we can not read each other in the house, I leave it with the small drawings.

As a rule, the children are more pleased with the notes than with sweets, although the actions do not always have to cost money. It's more a matter of consciously (more) spending time together in the pre-Christmas period and experiencing something nice together.

Since I fill the calendar only from day to day / for a few days in advance, I can also plan the actions so that it can REALLY take place on that day.

A nice Advent season!
