Art from old books

I love books and it's hard to part with them. Nevertheless, I sometimes need room for new reading material. I place a part of my old books in a publicly accessible bookshelf shelf. Now I also make art out of my old books. Depending on the size you can build a picture or a back wall for the bed.

For a small to medium picture I use a canvas. Books are hard, especially if they have a hard cover. If you want to equip large formats with bound books, you should use a wooden plate as a base for the book artwork. If the entire area is covered with books, it does not matter what the area looks like underneath. Special effects arise when the plate is previously painted and not everywhere books are attached. Then the color shines through on the free surfaces. As a background, I glued pages from the newspaper of an art festival with Dekopatch onto a canvas.

folding technique

So that the canvas with the books is not too heavy, I have only used paperbacks. If the canvas is painted or pasted and dry again, the books can be draped as desired on the canvas. If you have the desired picture, then the books can be edited and attached. It looks especially nice when the pages of a book are folded. From the middle of the book fold individual pages to the middle of the book. First fold from the middle to one side and then to the other side. Do not fold the first and last pages. In these subjects can then be postcards or pictures stuck. Then just brush the spine with glue and glue it to the canvas.

Books that have an envelope can be stuck in portrait format directly to the back of the book on the canvas. To keep some of the book pages at the top, only the envelope is placed over the pages. The paperbacks can be attached to the canvas with or without glue. Once opened, some pages can be glued together with a glue stick to make the book pages look as if they are just scrolling through them. If the book is not open and only the cover to be seen, then it is advisable to glue all pages before with glue. If the pages are completely glued, the book is so strong, they can even screw a coat hook with a cordless screwdriver.

Mounting on wooden boards

Who wants to make bound books and larger formats, should mount the books on a wooden board. The wood panel used should be thick enough to allow the books to be screwed tight. MDF boards work well. Open the book and screw both sides tight with a screw and the screwdriver. So that the screws are not visible afterwards, do not tighten four to six sides in the middle. Then glue these pages over the pages with the screw with a glue stick.

If you want to make sure that nothing goes wrong when tightening, you can glue the pages of the pages with glue or spray glue beforehand. After drying, it is easier to tighten the books without ripping the buck sides.
