Of course you can throw them on the compost and turn it into soil, where chives are growing again - but this cycle takes me too long!

An ancient trick: plant the old, exhausted plants into a larger container of fresh soil (for example, 5 pieces in a planter) or plant in the garden. Over time, a lot of things accumulated and now, to my heart's content, I can eat chive bread, as the individual plants always have enough time to recover. I just always make sure not to let the chives bloom, because that weakens him a lot!
