Build the ground rent - store the vegetables

Gorgeous, if the own vegetable garden brings rich harvest. But how does the vegetables get reasonably fresh over the winter? Very few still have the deep basement with soil, which is so wonderful for storage. Quite simple: Put a ground rent in the garden!

Especially for cabbages, carrots, celery or beetroot is the "storage in the hole? very well. You need a spade, a non-airtight container, a lid, sand and straw.

Build the ground rent yourself:

  1. Select a suitable location. Best close to the house, so you do not have to walk so far in the winter. Covered would be good, then does not penetrate so much moisture. You can also choose a harvested garden bed, because it digs easier.
  2. Dig a hole. At least 40 cm deep, length and width are measured according to the containers you want to bury.
  3. Do you dress the pit with vole wire? Unless you want to share your vegetables with all the rodents in the region.
  4. A thick layer of sand on the floor.
  5. The sides of the pit can be dammed with a layer of straw? especially if you intend to store potatoes.
  6. Insert your container. It is important that this is not completely closed, so that the contact with the earth and thus the moisture is maintained. Wine crates, fruit crates (also made of plastic) are well suited, but a disused washing machine drum also serves well. If you use old pots or buckets, you should first drill some holes in it, so that the air can circulate.
  7. Now you layer the unwashed vegetables: always a layer of vegetables, a layer of sand. The vegetables should be undamaged and freed from all leaves. You can also store fruits like apples, but you should separate them from the vegetables. Apples make other vegetables and fruits ripen faster!
  8. Lid, e.g. a wooden board on it. Efficient straw over it. Maybe a plastiplane against rain. Finished.

If you have a "normal", but cool cellar or a garden shed, for example, you can make a little ground rent by simply layering sand and vegetables alternately into a large wooden box. In general, a garden house in winter is wonderful for storing fruit and vegetables!

The latest trend is earth cellars? walk-in rooms that are dug into the garden. A kind of natural refrigerator that costs no energy! There are already kits, but even then, the construction is significantly more complex than the creation of a ground rent. You may even need a building permit. Anyone planning to build a cellar by themselves should plan it carefully. The location is best north, ideally a slope (then you do not dig so much) and in a place where the groundwater is not high. Ventilation must be planned to prevent condensation and eventually mold.
