Chinese cabbage - cultivation in the garden

How do I properly grow or grow Chinese cabbage?

Chinese cabbage belongs to the family of the Kreuzblütengewächse and originates, as the name already says, from China. Chinese cabbage is rich in vitamins and minerals and unlike other types of cabbage does not bloat, as it is particularly rich in mustard oils and amino acids.

Chinese cabbage can be grown both in the garden (outdoor) and in the greenhouse.

The Chinese cabbage seeds

The seeds are available in specialist shops (nursery, garden center) and in the supermarket in different varieties.

Sowing the seeds

Chinese cabbage can either be preferred in pots or sown directly in the field.

With the advancement of the seeds in pots we begin early / middle of June to prevent a premature shooting danger.
(Note: some new Chinese cabbage varieties have to be sown in spring already)

  • Fill the pot (diameter approx. 10 cm) with seed soil
  • Two seeds per pot are now placed about 2 cm deep in the seed soil. Then put the pot on the windowsill.
  • After the seedling has sprouted, it should remain on the windowsill for about four weeks.

The sowing of the seeds directly into the field takes place from July to August.
