Chocolate helps with coughing

Did you know that already? Not only does chocolate make you happy, it also helps with coughing: Recently I sat in a concert in the middle of other listeners and it was provoked a cough. But there was no escape. I would have had to go past five or seven other places to the right or left and would have disturbed in any case, coughing or going out, or both.

First, do I always try in such cases? Of course, behind closed doors and with closed mouth? to yawn. This relaxes the larynx and leads through the nose inhaled moist and warm air through the trachea. This can delay the coughing.

Then I looked in my purse, if there was not something to suck in it: just a bar of dark chocolate: 85 percent cocoa. It was worth a try. Quietly a piece broken off, pushed into the mouth and slowly melt in the mouth. I thought to remember darkly that chocolate also relieves coughing. And it worked !. All concertgoers including me could? without being disturbed by my cough? enjoy the concert. And I even had the chocolate treat. ?

At home I read again:

The substance Theobromine, which is found in chocolate, soothes the cough, There is even a study by the British Alyn Morris, University of Hull in Yorkshire, where participants were given either a chocolate-based preparation or codeine. The chocolate cut off better. The darker the chocolate, the higher the theobromine content. The cocoa butter contained in chocolate melts at body temperature. And is often used as a carrier for cosmetics and medicines. That's why chocolate melts so beautifully in the mouth. The melted chocolate then lays like a protective film on the mucous membranes and soothes the cough.

But beware: Theobromine? is translated into German - food of the gods? but can be extremely dangerous, even deadly, for animals. Especially dogs and cats are not allowed to eat chocolate. No chocolate for animals!

For people, chocolate does not just have desirable consequences. Much does not always help a lot. Therefore, I have for the purse an empty candy dispenser filled with dark chocolate chips (cocoa content at least 50%). Each drop has a diameter of just a few millimeters, but that's enough to prevent acute coughing. (For comparison: the piece of chocolate in the picture weighs 6.7 g). Maybe one or the other chocolate Easter bunny can act as a cough suppressant. Provided he is slowly sucked and not greedily nibbled.
