Christmas carol: It has arrived for us a while
Recently, a presenter at NDR Kultur said she does not really know why we're celebrating Christmas. Whether she really meant that seriously or just wanted to swim on the big wave of "modern" people, I do not know. But this statement has made it clear to me how the Christmas light is now.
I have nothing against all the beautiful Christmas traditions, Christmas decorations and songs, on the contrary, I'm a fan of it. However, the original reason should not be forgotten.
There is a very nice Christmas carol that has had a somewhat sad story: It was re-composed from the Christian song into a pure description of nature in the Third Reich. That is well done, but not the right text.
As a reminder (and maybe for some to suggest) I'll write down the original text here:
- A time has come for us, it is a great grace for us: Our Savior Jesus Christ, who for us, for us, has become man for us.
- In a crib the child must lie on hay and straw in the cold night. Between ox and donkey you lie, you lie, you lie, poor Jesus.
- And the three kings come looking for it, the star leads them to Bethlehem. Lay off the crown and scepter, bring him, bring him, bring him the offering.
How do you like this text? I think he is much more Christmassy than the text from the Nazi era.
