Cover lampshade with embroidery or crochet thread | DIY

It looks complicated, but it is not. Two lamp racks are covered with embroidery thread or very thin crochet thread and attached to each other. Looks great and is a real eye-catcher.

I used two conical lamp racks for the lamp. Both frames have a diameter of 20 centimeters on the larger side. One umbrella is a bit shorter than the other at 15 centimeters. But you can also use two equal-sized conical lamp racks with a diameter of 15 centimeters. First, the yarn is tied to the first frame with a double knot. Now the thread is always wrapped around the upper and lower ring of the frame. It is important that on the narrow top of the thread is very close together. Please do not overlay the thread. I made a boat from a wooden handle for weaving. Cut small triangles out of the wood at the top and bottom and the yarn can be wound up on top. This makes it easier to wrap the frame. The weaving boat can also be made of cardboard itself. It's even easier if you have a shuttle from a loom at hand.

When a thread is over, the new thread is knotted at the end of the old thread. The thread should always be knotted inside the lampshade so that you do not see it.

Two options

There are two ways to connect the two racks, right at the beginning or only after the first frame has been completely covered. If you first cover the first frame, the second one is held under the first and the shuttle with the thread is drawn from the larger ring of the first frame to the lower ring of the second frame. The thread is always pulled between two threads of the finished frame. This is a bit difficult. However, stringing the first frame is faster. So that both frames do not slip constantly, I first attached them with yarn in three places together.

In the second variant, both frames are covered from the outset simultaneously. The thread is then alternately only from the middle ring up, again to the middle and then stretched down and back to the middle. Although this technique saves the laborious weaving between the threads as in the first variant, working on two frames at the same time, especially at the beginning, is very unwieldy. One has then with the holding of the complete lamp already so its difficulties. If you want to span different colors offset, as in my example, you have to weave here again.

This is needed:

  • Embroidery thread or very thin crochet yarn
  • 1 conical lamp base (Ø 20 cm, H: 20 cm, Ø 10 cm) and a conical clamping frame (Ø 20 cm, H: 15 cm, Ø 12.5 cm) or 2 frames with the dimensions (Ø 17.5 cm, H: 15.5 cm, Ø 12.5 cm)
  • scissors
  • Webships or homemade boat made of cardboard or an ice-lolly.
