Cups of newspaper

You can make all sorts of newsprint.

I like to make painted baskets of newspaper. For example, they are quite good as a planter, which I also like to do when I give away a plant (bought or even pulled), that costs a little tinkering, but otherwise not much money.

To make such a basket, unfolded newspapers are placed in wide strips. These are then folded two to three times lengthwise, so that three-four-ply stripes arise.

Now you put once the base of the later basket. To do this, place the strips side by side, then from one side, as in weaving, slip a strip between the already lying strips so that this new strip lies once above and once under the other strips.

So you continue until you have reached the base of the basket.

Then you can continue with the sidewalls, which are then placed around the base in front of and behind the individual strips. In between you can fix the strips with staples.

Once you have reached the desired height, lay it around (or make it into a triangle with the adjacent side) and pin it down. The rest is simply cut off.

The finished baskets are then painted with acrylic varnish or sprayed with spray paint.

This gives you a leathery surface.

The dried baskets are then lined from the inside with foil, which is clamped at the inner edge.

Now you can put a plant in it.

I also like to use rectangular baskets and put in a plastic bowl (of mushrooms or carrots), which I have planted with herbs. That looks pretty pretty too.

If you want to get very tight cups, you can get stuck between the layers of the strips and let the strips dry before braiding. After braiding is then peeled and dried again before the baskets are painted.

That way, they become very hard and firm.
