Fabric fir trees

Years ago I saw such fabric fir trees at an exhibition and wanted to imitate them this year. Here is the result or a guide:

Materials:

  • Cardboard as template material for fir-tree and star
  • paper scissors
  • fabric scissors
  • Create template for Christmas tree and star by yourself and freehand
  • sewing machine
  • sewing thread
  • Christmas fabrics, green ...
  • 1 Christmas fabric, cream, white or gold for stars
  • Volume fleece for stars - iron-on, because then the embroidering of the stars is easier
  • If present: Metallic yarn (gold-silver) to surround the stars
  • if necessary cutting mat + rotary cutter, mini
  • Pins or weights
  • possibly Rotary cutter, as small as possible (mini), so you can shape the curves when cutting equal to better / nachfahren
  • if necessary metallic yarn, golden for the edges of the stars (then corresponding sewing machine needles for metallic yarns)
  • Filler / magic cotton
  • Breakfast bag / freezer bag, small
  • Bird sand or similar to complain
  • Scotch tape
  • Sewing needle for closing the bottom seam by hand

Remarks:

  1. I've worked five trees as an ensemble, a single shows probably not so much ago ...
  2. Two more things that I unfortunately did not notice:
  • When creating a template take into account that the centimeters that bring the volume will be lost in the width by the subsequent plugging. I would have liked a bit wider my trees, but the next Christmas is coming back for sure ...
  • Furthermore, the tree after below make it widest so that it does not stand there so shaky later.
  • So that the Christmas trees can stand later, I came up with the idea, after stuffing with filling cotton, but before closing the bottom seam, to push a small bag filled with bird sand (heavy!) Into the Christmas tree. Only then is the bottom seam closed. If the plastic bag is not too full, you can always move the bird's sand in it and give the fir tree the desired stability.
  • I closed the plastic bags with tightly wrapped Tesafilm and cut off the rest of the bag. Later, I first put this closure in the center of the fir tree so that it disappears inside the filling material.

Method:

  1. Lay fabric twice - right = pretty side inside.
  2. Put the template on it and cut it out with seam allowance. Here and later when sewing you do not have to work exactly: Each fir-tree gets its individual shape ...
  3. If necessary, stick the fabrics, lay them under the sewing machine and lay them together, sewing them together, starting at the bottom, Ri. Lace and ending at the bottom again. Be sure to secure the beginning and end of the seam so that it does not tear when stuffing. Leave the bottom seam open for later stuffing / filling and insertion of the plastic bag.
  4. Leave the fabric as sewn and press the seam allowances - one on top of the other.
  5. seam allowance Not Iron apart as with most garments. This will make the seam stronger.
  6. Actually, one would now turn and stuff the Christmas tree, etc., but its shape implies the fact that the seam is not straight, but the fabric is sometimes arched outward and bent in other places inwards. At these points, we would receive quite ugly shapes after turning, because the seam allowances would not readily cling to the respective curvature.
  7. That's why you have to in front the turning the seam allowance maybe cut a bit (decrease in width) and then edit as follows:
  8. In all places where the fabric after turning after i(note i) arched, carefully approach the seam line in the seam allowances up to 1 mm hineingeschnitten. This allows the fabric to follow the rounding at these points and bend slightly apart, making the seam allowance smoother.
  9. In all places where the fabric after turning after aubulging (note au), the seam allowances are pressed together in the longitudinal direction as it were - here disturbs the mass of material that seems too much. Therefore, before turning here wedges aus the seam allowances agoaucut back - up to 1 mm to the seam line.
  10. So, now this Fummel work is done and you can turn the Christmas tree!
  11. You're welcome Not Press (!!!) so that the tree can unfold a little his later compact three-dimensional form!
  12. Possibly. from the inside with the thumbnail along the seam line and so again form the contour of more accurate - if bellows, that does not matter, because in nature, nothing is absolutely symmetrical shaped ... For the tip, please do not take any scissors ...
  13. Now you can go to the stopper: Push the first parts of the filling cotton right into the top. Fill in the remaining cavity from top to bottom, paying particular attention to the bumps Outside to form.
  14. Do not stuff too tight, otherwise the tree will look so rigid.
  15. Shortly "before" the bottom seam with bird sand? push filled plastic bag into the Christmas tree - if necessary take out a little filling material again ...
  16. Before sewing the bottom seam put the tree down (PRIDE? JOY!), Take another critical look at the shape and if necessary add / remove cotton wool.
  17. Close the bottom seam with colored sewing thread.
  18. Iron fabric for stars only one last time, then with (iron-on?) Volume fleece provided? Put the template on top and trim the front and back with seam allowance? Sewing the contour with metallic yarn and zigzag stitches: Personally, I do not work the zigzag stitch directly on the edge, but rather a little further inside and lastly cut back the excess fabric.
  19. Do not iron / press finished stars !!!
  20. Finally, stitch the stars to each fir-tree with a few stitches on their backside!

addendum:

  • Maybe take different fabrics for the front and back of the trees so that you can turn them around and then have a different view ?!
  • Make the trees different sizes?
  • In any case, make an eye-catcher = "outlier", i. Make a tree in shape or color so that it differs significantly from the rest and therefore automatically draws the eyes on the entire tree group alone.

Have fun reworking - I'm looking forward to inquiries and additions!

Thanks in advance and greetings!
