Floating homemade wooden lamp

We like wood and light. The challenge, we wanted a self-made light wood lamp above the kitchen table, which just lit the table and is very inconspicuous.

The idea

The idea is to bring in two spots, as with a lowered ceiling, and then hang the board unobtrusively with fishing lines floating on the ceiling. When the lamp is off, you overlook the floating board. When it's on, you do not really notice it, because the focus is on the table, which then feels cozy and inviting. This effect may not look good on the pictures.

What do you need?

  • Fishing line + scissors
  • Four to six hooks (best closed) with screw thread
  • Steel drill (3 mm) + cordless drill
  • Stone drill (4-5 mm) + 4-6 dowels + percussion drill

I have used high quality soft fishing line with 73 kg tensile strength.

How do you do it?

First drill through the board to fit the holes. A steel drill does not get as hot as a wood drill and has a much longer tool life, especially with thin holes. Trim the fishing line. Then drill the holes in the ceiling and equip with dowels, attach the screw hooks. Tie the fishing line down at the bottom (pull yourself tight) and attach to the top of the screw hook. Pay attention to the right balance.

Attention

This tip refers only to the suspension of the lamp (a wooden board) on the ceiling and not to their construction of the lamp or connection to the power. Who does not control, should definitely seek advice. To build the lamp you need some experience with wood tools and wood care. It's easy to learn and fun. The connection of the lamp to the power, if necessary, a 12 V transformer, and laying of 230 V power cables, however, should only be done if there is sufficient experience. As a tip: Since the lamp is located in an area where you can easily approach and someone can grab, we recommend a 12 V transformer, as it is much less dangerous than 230 V.

difficulty level

5 of 10 = Attaching the lamp with fishing lines is in principle quite easy once the lamp itself is built. Drilling into the ceiling may not be entirely without.

Have fun trying.
