How do I plant or grow fennel properly?

Fennel belongs to the umbelliferae family and is one of the oldest cultivated plants in Central and Southern Europe. The well-known for its healing effect vegetable plant is available in different ways. The most famous fennel varieties are:

  • The vegetable fennel (also called tuber fennel)
  • The spice fennel (also called sweet fennel)
  • The Wild Fennel (also called Bitterfenchel)

Fennel can be grown and grown both in the garden (outdoors) and in the greenhouse.

The fennel seeds

The seeds are available in specialist shops (nursery, garden center) and in the supermarket in different varieties.


Sowing the seeds

Fennel can either be preferred in germination dishes or sown directly in the field.

With the advancement of the seeds in germination dishes we start in early April and end in mid-June.
(Attention: Some new fennel varieties have to be sown already in spring)

  • Put the seed in the soil about 1 cm deep
  • Place germ husk on the windowsill.
    Note: For germination, the vegetable needs a temperature between 20 and 22 degrees
  • After the plant has germinated and more leaves have formed (in about 5 weeks after sowing), the young plant can be planted in the field

Timing for sowing the seeds directly into the field:

  • Vegetable stew: April to the end of June
  • Spice fennel: April to August

Transplanting the seedlings / sowing the seeds

  • Particularly suitable is a sandy or loamy soil for fennel breeding. For a successful breeding we choose now a warm and sunny place
  • When transplanting the young plant in the field, the soil ball and young plant is slowly released from the pot and planted deep into the soil
  • When sowing the seeds directly into the field, plant them 1 cm deep in the ground
  • Between the plants should be approximately a distance of 50 cm
  • Fennel needs a moist, nutrient-rich soil. Therefore, on the one hand should be paid to a sufficient irrigation. On the other hand, the soil should be enriched with compost before sowing and about five weeks later
  • In order to continue to meet the high demand for fennel nitrogen, synthetic fertilizers should be used
  • Harvest time: middle / end of October

After harvesting, the fennel can be stored in the cellar for several weeks
