Hamster broke out?

And today again a tip to the little guys, because apparently there are enough owners here :)

My dear Pitti escaped her cage every few days a few months ago, as she has done, I still do not know. So now a few tips for catching and especially for prevention, so they do not make it again (I could now write whole books over it;)).

Surely spout is important for the curious animals, but it also carries many dangers. If you are relatively sure that the hamster has broken out, you should put water and food in all the potential lounges (especially if it could be in the whole apartment and the search area is not limited to one room!).

Now there is the bucket trick:
Fill a trash can or other tall container with hay / litter and food and set a wicker bridge, or a set of books in front of it, so that the hamster can fall into the bucket. You can fish it out there the next morning or in the near future.

Now it can happen that, as with my hamster, they somehow do not fall for it (in the truest sense of the word).
First of all, one should then locate the animal. I did that with apple quarters that I laid out in every room. The next morning I looked, which was gnawed. So you can restrict the area once. Then you look best in every little corner and clears everything out of the way, under which the little guy could hide.

The more noise you make, the better. Even if your friend is a little frightened by this, it usually causes him to run. Therefore, always look around, if something moves nimbly through the room, if so, quickly and catch (best to attract, into a bowl and back into the cage).

But if none of the two tactics work, then at least ensure that the hamster has a regulated shelter, thus increasing the chance to find him there. This works for the very best, if you make a hole in a cardboard box, sprinkle litter out of the cage and put your house back in place. As it all smells of home, he will run full of desire into his familiar home. There he usually finds himself, and can be resettled in the cage again.

So, but what do you do, so that does not happen again, and you can sleep in peace again?

Of course, you should always check whether you can discover the path to freedom and then seal it as best as possible. But if there are too many possibilities, you can make the lattice cage definitely different definitely outbreak-proof. For this one needs:

- Plexiglas plates (depending on the size of your cage)
- A drill / cordless screwdriver
- Cable ties

Quite simply: fix holes on all four corners of the panels and the ones with the cable ties on the inside of the cage. Then they can not climb up to the bars any more and vlt. slip through the ceiling. In difficult places I have "secured" the grids with cardboard. As a climbing alternative, I have in my cage (okay, have a one with the dimensions 1.20 x 50) leaned a large willow bridge perpendicular to the wall, so they can let off steam there.

Because of the air circulation you do not have to worry about everything stays open at the top and at the sides sometimes also small slits, there is enough air into it.

In general, however: To make a cage escape-proof, you must always remember that your hamster is usually ten times more creative than you. So the fantasy is a little tighter, and then it works with the neighbor (in the cage) :)
