Making Chalk Paint yourself ~ DIY

Chalk Paint is a color used to Wooden furniture, boxes or trays in vintage look (shabby chic style) can design. The painted surfaces have a matte, powdery appearance. The colors are quite expensive in the trade. Up to 30 euros can cost a liter. Therefore, it is worthwhile to mix them yourself. All you need is whiting and acrylic paint from the hardware store.

The possibilities

To make chalk paint yourself, there are different possibilities. You can mix gypsum powder with water and mix with acrylic paint or use soda instead of gypsum. Gypsum has the disadvantage that the paint hardens quickly. In addition, the coating result is very rough and the whole thing is not particularly scratch-resistant. I prefer chalk paint from whiting. The mixture of water-blended whiting (calcium carbonate) and acrylic paint comes closest to the colors known in the trade as Chalk Paint. The blended from calcium carbonate chalk paint is versatile. Not only chests of drawers and small boxes, but also chairs can be painted with it. The good thing: wooden furniture or boxes do not have to be pickled or sanded beforehand. The chalk paint can be applied directly.

The mixture

The whole thing is called chalk color, but chalkboard chalk is not meant. If you chop chalk and mix with acrylic varnish, you will soon realize that the whole thing is very porous. This is because today's chalk is no longer made of pure chalk but, e.g. also plaster is mixed. Whitewash was formerly used to plaster house walls. You can buy them at the hardware store. I mix 50 g of whiting with water and then mix in a ratio of 1: 2 with 100 g acrylic paint. If the paint is too thick, then just add some more water. After painting, the paint should dry thoroughly overnight. By applying beeswax or furniture wax with a dry cloth, the chalk color can be preserved. After waxing, the surfaces can be sanded well to achieve the typical worn look. The surface can be trimmed to old by first applying a layer of light wax and then a layer of dark wax. But you can also seal the furniture with clear lacquer.

This is needed:

  • Acrylic lacquer silk matt
  • whiting
  • water
  • Mason jar or jam jar
  • Wooden stick to stir
  • Mixing ratio: 2 parts Color: 1 part whiting (calcium carbonate)
