Oatmeal as a diet for diarrhea

In order to regain strength in case of diarrhea, it is necessary to have a diet that does not put too much strain on the intestines, but which quickly supplies the body with vitamins, nutrients and minerals that have been lost through diarrhea. This activates the self-healing powers of the body.

Oats are a particularly valuable grain, easily digestible starch, high-quality vegetable fat and protein. Vitamin B1, magnesium, iron, zinc. Because of these good properties, oats are properly prepared already suitable as baby food. Oats contain little to no gluten, so some varieties are even suitable for people with gluten intolerance.


Oats are quickly prepared in the form of oatmeal. Many know it as a cereal base. In case of diarrhea oats in the form of porridge are even better tolerated. But oatmeal does not always have to be prepared sweet. It is also hearty or varied.

Ingredients for 2 servings:

  • 1 cup of oatmeal
  • 2 cups of water (possibly chicken stock or vegetable stock)
  • ¼ tsp salt
  • ¼ tsp sugar

Preparation in a normal saucepan:

  1. Put all ingredients in a pot
  2. Mix well
  3. Boil
  4. Cook over low heat and stir occasionally

Preparation in pressure cooker:

Fill the pot with the usual amount of water. Put all ingredients in unperforated tray and cook for 7 minutes at level 1 (follow instructions of the pressure cooker).

At the same time, further ingredients may be co-cooked in another perforated insert, e.g. Carrots or apples.


On a day when light food is the order of the day, it is best to cook a large portion of neutral porridge and distribute it throughout the day, portion by portion, and vary slightly depending on your appetite.

  • with broth (vegetables or chicken broth classic ill food)
  • with carrots (classic diet for diarrhea)
  • with sugar and cinnamon (cinnamon is also good for diarrhea)
  • with orange juice (squeeze half an orange over a serving of porridge)
  • with apple (grated apple or applesauce, also known diet for diarrhea)

On days of normal diet, oatmeal can also be seasoned more spicy, with garlic, onions and chili peppers even as an accompaniment to a meal.

Remains of porridge can be further processed like semolina slices. Add the raw egg and mix well. Cut off the casserole into fat or, with two spoons, place the piles on a baking sheet and bake. Add more ingredients to taste.


Remains can also be used to make biscuits or crispbread. It's good if you know the recipe. Add more ingredients except water and use dry oatmeal to achieve the consistency required for the dough.
