Pull avocado plant

How to make an avocado from an avocado plant, I have tried in recent months. It worked out well and was a lot of fun to see how it developed. From the core has grown a really great avocado plant. Maybe a tree will come out of it, it will not bear fruit, but it looks very nice.

The pictures show the order in which I proceeded and the development from the core to the plant.

I would like to say in advance that there are different ways to get an avocado core out of circulation.

I did it that way:

Step 1: Put the avocado core into the water

First, I washed 2 avocado seeds with water and stuck them in the middle of a core, 3 or 4 sides, around the toothpick. You have to make sure that you do not puncture too far, otherwise the core will be damaged too much.

You then need a glass of water in which you can hang the core so that it is half in the water (pictures 1 and 3). At first I did not know for a long time, whether the upper or lower side should go into the water. After searching the internet, I found out that you should take the bottom, flattened end. In addition, one has more success, if the core comes from a ripe avocado fruit, I had respected. In order to avoid mold, the avocado core should be washed off well first.

Do not expose the core to direct sunlight (a dark spot is recommended) and the recommended temperature is 20 degrees. I just had it in the middle of my kitchen (where least light goes on) on the counter and it was over the summer months, so of course it was often warmer too.

Step 2: Avocado pots ready for planting

After 4 weeks, one of my two cores was expelled so far that it was time to plant the core. In these 4 weeks, I made sure that the core is always half in the water. The water also evaporates over time and I have every 2-3 days poured some fresh water.

Step 3: Planting the avocado kernel

For planting I used a flower pot and normal potting soil. The core, as you can see in the picture, to about half burrow.

Burst the core in half in a flower pot with potting soil.

Step 4: Avocado core breaks

After only 6 days the core started to break up and gradually the core broke apart.

Step 5: The first tender leaflets

After another 4 weeks, then came the first tender leaflets.

After another 4 weeks, the first tender leaflets came to light.

To care:

  • Basically, the plant does not need much care. It is important that the core, or later the plant, in the soil is not kept too wet, otherwise it can easily form mold.
  • An avocado tree is like other exotic plants, sensitive to too much moisture. Therefore you can give the plant again and again water breaks. (Unlike at the beginning, if you want to get the nucleus to germinate).
  • The small avocado plant, unlike the core, needs more light, but still should not be exposed to direct sunlight. As the avocado grows larger, it's good to have plenty of sunlight. You could then put them directly on a sunny windowsill.
  • The avocado plant should never be colder than 15 degrees, otherwise it will drop the leaves.
  • It is recommended to fertilize the avocado plant with organic fertilizer once a month, I did not do that, but I will do it for the future. Maybe I was just lucky that my plant grew so well without fertilizer. However, one should suspend the fertilization in the autumn and winter months to avoid unhealthy growth of the avocado plant.
  • There are several ways to grow an avocado plant, I tried one, and was successful with one of two seeds. It can happen again and again that a core does not drive out, or only after a very long time. If you want to be sure, you can take several cores right away :)

Finally:

The avocado plant after about 6 months

I had started in April to let the avocado core in the water, today, the plant is 60 cm high.

The avocado plant tends to grow as a long dash, so it is recommended to prune the plant so that it branches. This should be started when the plant is about 30 cm high. Unfortunately, I missed that and I have to make up for it now.

Now I'm curious who still tried to pull such a pretty avocado plant.
