Sew a cake bag from dishcloths yourself

It is a real challenge for a birthday child to transport cake to school for nearly 30 primary school children. The bag of two old tea towels is ideal for this purpose. Satchel on the back, a cake pouch right, one left and off you go.

In addition, the old tea towels are recycled and within less than two hours, a bag for transporting cakes is quickly sewn.

This is needed:

  • 2 old dishcloths (dimensions: 65 x 48 cm)
  • A scissors
  • tape measure
  • pins
  • sewing machine

2 old dishcloths (dimensions: 65 x 48 cm), a pair of scissors, a measuring tape, pins and a sewing machine are needed.

The tea towels should have the dimensions 65 x 48 cm. They are then cut to the dimensions 65 x 40 cm, i. From both towels, an 8 cm wide strip is simply cut off on the long side. These handles become the handles (22 cm long and 8 cm wide) of the bag. Simply cut two 22 cm pieces of fabric from the 8 cm wide strip. The handles are ironed before sewing. Fold the long outer edges inwards to the middle, iron them, then put them on top of each other, iron again and sew together at the outer edge.

From both towels on the long side just an 8 cm wide strip is cut off and used as Henkel. The two tea towels are stacked, each with the beautiful side inside (right to right). Any remaining laundry or towel hangers will be cut off.

Wrapping strap

Lay the two tea towels on top of each other, each with the nice side inwards (right to right). Cut off any remaining laundry slips or towel rails. The cloths are sewn together with the pocket handles, except for a small opening (either bottom left or bottom right), and then turned. Fold the straps on both sides to one corner and sew them together on the dishcloth to serve as inner lining. First sew the cloths together at the sides with the straps. Then it is easier to check if the handles are sewn together correctly. Then close a long side seam. The last seam is not completely closed, so that the bag can be turned. I left an opening on the lower right side and then turned the bag inside out. At the same time, remove the corners and smooth with the iron.

The cloths are sewn together with the bag handles, except for a small opening.Fold the carrying straps on both sides to one corner and put them together on the inside of the dishcloth, which serves as inner lining.

The sides with the handles are then folded upwards so that they are about 13 cm wide over the inner lining. The bag then has a total width of 37 cm and a height of 38 cm. Now the wrapped pages are sewn. This automatically closes the opening for turning the fabric.
