Shorten jeans with preservation of the original hem (with scissors)

Who does not know: the jeans are perfect, but they are too long - unbearable without original hem - so shorten with preservation of the original hem!

I know the method without scissors, but this is most suitable for children's pants or those that may need to be shortened by a total of 5 cm. Since my pants do not have to grow with them, I would rather shorten them with scissors, which is - especially with jeans - cleaner.

Needed:

  • French chalk
  • scissors
  • pins
  • basting thread
  • sewing machine
  • Iron
  • tape measure

This is how it's done:

  1. Pin pants to the desired length and mark the cutting line with tailor's chalk.
  2. Cut pant legs along the mark.
  3. Trouser hem.
  4. From the cut off part cut off the hem so that the seam above the seam has a seam allowance of about the seam width (about 0.5-1 cm). Line cut edge.
  5. Separate the original seam seam.
  6. Now attach the original hem with the inside out to the trouser leg. The cut edge of the hem is now inside.
  7. Pin pants and hem together and then stitch together from the outside along the original seam line of the hem. The seam line is still wonderful to see after the split.
  8. Remove the stitching thread.

Tip:

In order to get over the thicker side seam beads without breaking off the needle, we recommend a denim needle and a lifting plate, which can be used to overcome thicker seams. Husqvarna manufactures these, just inquire at retailers.

Of course, this can also be applied to all other pants if they have a hem in the style of a jeans hem.

It gets a little harder with jeans / trousers that have flared leg shapes (blow, bootcut). Since the leg is narrowing up, the original room may be a little too far. This can also be remedied by also separating the hem on one of the side seams and then sewing a little closer and then attaching to the shortened trouser stitch.

It's always the question of how much time is worth the pants, if it were now a 15 Euro jeans, I would certainly not do it, but choose the simple variant. Since I do not own such jeans, it is definitely worth the work time.

If I were to shorten a pair of jeans again shortly, then I post photos.

Have fun trying!
