Shower made from home-made effervescent powder

Preparation time: 5 min.

Who buys soft drinks, has to make many compromises: How much sugar or even glucose-fructose syrup is included? What other unwanted flavorings or preservatives besides too many calories are in it? Do I buy it in the returnable bottle or disposable plastic, glass or metal container? Do I need the car with so much weight for shopping or even get a spinal disc damage, because I drag everything myself? And who brings the empty containers back to the store or for recycling?

No problem if you mix your own shower with a little powder and water from the faucet.

Ingredients for the effervescent powder

  • 1 tablespoon of soda (eg Kaiser soda)
  • 1 tablespoon of citric acid (= E 330 is available in drugstores, supermarkets and Turkish grocery stores, if the E number is on it, it is food grade)
  • if necessary 1 tbsp of sugar (I take normal table sugar, any other dry sweetener is also, who wants to take liquid sweetener, such as honey or maple syrup, it should first add with the liquid)
  • if necessary, 1 teaspoon dry lemon peel

Preparation of effervescent powder

The dry ingredients can be mixed in stock and stored in a screw-cap protected from moisture.

Basic mix for the effervescent drink

  • 1 tsp of the effervescent powder mixture
  • 250 ml of liquid

lemon shower

  • 1 tsp of the effervescent powder mixture with sugar
  • 200 ml of water
  • 1 pinch of lemon peel
  • a dash of lemon juice

orange shower

  • 1 tsp of the effervescent powder mixture with sugar
  • 200 ml of water
  • 1 pinch of orange peel
  • a dash of lemon or orange juice

herbal shower

  • 1 tsp of effervescent powder mixture without sugar
  • 250 ml of cold herbal tea

peppermint shower

  • 1 tsp of the effervescent powder mixture with sugar
  • 200 ml of cold mint tea
  • a knife-tip of lemon peel
  • a dash of lemon juice
  • Peppermint leaves for decoration

Mix the effervescent drink only by the glass with well-chilled liquid and serve and enjoy immediately. It bubbles up in the beginning, but after a while the bubbling fades. For the orange and lemon zest I take sugar in the base mix, for herbal shower with mint tea or herbal tea I leave the sugar away. It bubbles just as well and is just a matter of taste, how sweet you want to drink. But even with sugar in the above dosage, the finished beverage has only about one twentieth of the sugar content of commercial soft drinks.

The self-mixed effervescent powder I've already used instead of baking soda to use vegan egg whites. Mix a teaspoon of it under 120 ml chickpea liquid and beat it stiff with the electric whisk, resulting in a wonderful chickpea snow (cf. //
