My cousin advised me to wrap the grate overnight in newspaper and leave it lying in the grass. Although I was very skeptical, we did it anyway (tomorrow is finally a day). The astonishment the next morning was great: the rust was easily wipe clean with the rest of the newspaper. Logical, that we always do it this way!
It also works on the balcony: moisten newspaper, wrap in rust, first sleep over it. The trick works just as well with baking trays and the grate from the oven.
