This sponge cake makes the heart beat faster at the sight. Whether as a birthday present, Mother's Day or as an eye-catcher on the cake buffet - the juicy heart cake is guaranteed a sweet surprise!

The dough is prepared in two portions: first bake a red cake, cut out the heart, place in the light dough and bake a second time. This is how it works in fast-forward, but now step by step to the cake with heart!

Ingredients (for a box shape with approx. 30 cm)

  • 400 g butter
  • 400 g of sugar
  • 2 pck vanilla sugar
  • 8 eggs
  • 600 g of flour
  • 4 teaspoons baking powder
  • 200 ml of orange juice
  • possibly grated orange peel (Dr.Oetker)
  • red food coloring
  • Chocolate for the glaze

preparation

Step 1:

Mix 200 g butter, 200 g sugar and 1 packet of vanilla sugar until creamy. Then stir in 4 eggs one after the other.

Mix 300 g of flour, 2 teaspoons of baking powder and 1 pinch of salt. Alternately, mix with 100 ml of orange juice under the dough.

The prepared dough is now dyed red with food coloring (alternatively you can also take cocoa). Put in a greased and flour-dusted tin box.

Bake the cake in a preheated oven for approx. 55 minutes at 180 degrees (circulating air 160 degrees). Chopstick sample (no liquid dough should adhere to the wooden stick)!

Allow the cake to cool for about 15 minutes, then remove from the mold. Allow the cake to cool completely. Slice.

Step 2:

Cut out the heart (if there is no heart cookie cutter: just make a template out of paper and cut it out with a knife).

Cut out hearts from the red cake slices.

Step 3:

Make a second batter just as well - just leave out the food color this time!

Put a small amount of light dough on the bottom of the prepared box mold (it is enough if the bottom is covered). Place the hearts close together in the dough.
