The best-known apple varieties and their use

Apples are the most popular fruit for Germans. Worldwide there are about 30,000 different apple varieties, and in Germany only! around 2,000 varieties grown. But apple is not just apple - the individual varieties differ not only in flavor and taste, but u. a. also in the festivals of the pulp and the shell, in the vitamin content, in the shelf life, etc. Thus, some varieties are especially for raw consumption or for fruit salads, others better for cooking, compote and Mus or even for baking.

Since I love to eat apples crispy-fresh and juicy, but they also like to use for baking, I have put together the most popular varieties, which are usually on offer, and their properties.

Boskoop:

Firm pulp and peel and strong fruity-sour taste - therefore very good for baked apples, for baking apple strudel and also for cooking applesauce. With prolonged storage, it is a bit crumbly.


Braeburn:

Juicy and crunchy with a bittersweet-sour taste, high vitamin C content - best for pure consumption or for fruit salads.

Cox Orange:

Sweet-sour flavor - suitable for consumption as well as for baking and cooking.

Elstar:

Fruity, spicy and crunchy with a sweet-sour taste, very rich in vitamin C - suitable for raw food but also as applesauce or compote.


Golden Delicious:

Juicy with a sweet-aromatic taste - that's why it's best to enjoy it pure, but also suitable for fruit salad or compote.

Gala Royal:

Sweet and aromatic with firm pulp - good for raw consumption, fruit salads, but also for baked apples, for baking apple strudel and as compote well suited.

Granny Smith:

Firm, crisp apple with a fresh, sour taste - especially good for pure consumption and in salads or muesli as well as for sorbets and smoothies.


Idared:

A firm, medium-apple variety with a fine-sour taste - can be stored very well and is well suited for baked apples, compote and also goes well with hearty dishes.

Jonagold:

Very juicy and aromatic-sweet apple - is particularly suitable for the production of apple juice, but also for baking, cooking and of course also for raw food.

Pink Lady:
