What to do if the TÜV objected to the dull headlights

The garage had to change owner after probably too little work. What happened? The car and me, we came through the MOT. The workshop, now a monopolist in the whole of Berlin, but secured - in the long term thought - a small follow-up order in the amount of several hundred euros. A few meters away from me, the examiner got the hint from the "Account Manager": You should certainly write the headlights on it. The test report was therefore amended accordingly (Fig. 2).

The front lenses of the headlights were really dull, like those of several hundred thousand cars in Germany. The hardy yellowing after many years was not as ocher as in cars in Spain or on Gran Canaria, but it was really due.

Who needs to help in such cases? The Internet! Of course, I ordered the polish paste "Meguiars PLASTX" from Amazon. Both headlamps were taped all around (square to pointed), of course with so-called foil aprons, so that the paint was not ... Then I showed each headlight about 20-30 minutes, what hands and arms create after 14 years of strength training.

Result: Cumulus cloud on both headlights, certainly very cute, but probably exactly what some with Elmex u. also reach.

Man, what did you do wrong? Oh God, the great paste is actually meant for polishing with the machine. Of course, the polishing wheel came quickly with the post, the headlights were taped all around again. Yes, actually I should have photographed the mess. Sure, the car is no longer spotted white like a toadstool, the hedge since the last rain not more.

Conclusion of the polishing shop:

The polishing of the two surfaces only works completely if you remove both headlights, clamp and then polish.

Because of the paste, the surfaces can not be assessed during work. In some places the hard layer is preserved, on others it is quickly polished down. With built-in headlamps, the hard layer on the edges of the headlight front remains almost untouched, because it is protected by the surrounding body parts (Figure 1).

Is there an alternative?

Well - if you are not demanding and have some time - already.

You can buy sandpaper or order online and the hardcoat after carefully masking the headlight environment down grind. In my case, one quarter of a sheet of wet (soaked) sandpaper of grain 2000, 3000 and 5000 was enough for each headlight.

You begin to remove the yellowed, cloudy hard layer on the spotlight with the grain 2000 vertical, then grinded with grain 3000 horizontally over it and then finishes with grain 5000 vertically. The last operation can of course also be carried out with polishing paste. Even in this variant, you can not grind around the edge regions of the hard layer around.

The final cleaning can be done with water. Thereafter, it is expedient to coat or seal the ground surfaces.

I once took "Perlway rain deflector". This is unfortunately only a short-term solution that makes water roll off better, but with alcohol can be removed at any time. You can only buy the expensive protective varnish for sealing if you want to coat twenty car headlights with it - and the cars are standing in the dust-free hall.

Now I'm curious if the community will find a hair coat or something better that I can do on the spotlights on the long run.
