Fight the fur muff - remove odors from old furs

I am a collector, therefore, in my extensive collection of carding, of course, old furs are not missing. Only old, used, no new furs. These are then often since the time of Wum and Wendelin in the basement and stink around. So far, I've got the Stink out of a Silver Fox Stole, a Persian Muff and a Wolf Fur Leather Hat like this:

First steps against odors:

  • First of all, shake off the good, old piece thoroughly. Then prepare lukewarm water with a small dash of vinegar and wipe the fur carefully, always with the stroke. Do not thoroughly soak, please, and do not brush against the grain!
  • The fabric side of each piece of fur can be carefully sprayed with Febreeze, but not completely soaked, that does not make sense.
  • Then on terrace or balcony, ideally in the wind, let air well, a day or two. I would not expose the fur to direct sunlight.
  • The smell is certainly better after that, but probably not gone yet. That's clear, because what took years to stink like that would not smell like roses in two days.

The next step:

  • I would then put small fur parts in a laundry bag (as for bras and delicate clothes) and then in a pillow case with zipper. Both the laundry bag, as well as the pillowcase I spit with some dryer cloths and then put it in the tumble dryer. Set to warm air and gentle cycle and let so long as necessary in the dryer. But then I would change the cloths every 40 minutes, and check again and again, so that the piece does not suffer too much.
  • Fur parts that can not get into the dryer, such. B. the muff from Persian. After step 1 (wiping and airing), I fill a pillowcase with a mixture of ground coffee powder and cat litter). Attention: I would not expose light fur parts to the coffee powder for obvious reasons. Therein rest the part then a few days. The mixture should be changed again and again.

Finally, I would like to say here that a professional cleaning is certainly the easiest and best way, but also more costly.

I wish a lot of patience, good luck and always remember: "Whoever strives hard, we want to redeem (from the muff) :-). (After Goethe).
