Homemade dog treats - because you know what to feed

Inspired by the frolic-as-a-treats discussion, I give you here a few recipes for homemade dog treats that taste the dog, are well tolerated and protect your wallet.

They are not difficult to prepare, you just have to spare some time. But that should be worth a four-legged friend - at least now and then.

As a basis for the recipes, I do not use wheat flour, as many dogs are allergic to wheat.
Instead, offers spelled flour or spelled semolina.

Recipe 1: Banana Treats

Ingredients:

  • 250 g spelled semolina (for example from Alnatura)
  • 100 g spelled wholemeal flour
  • 1 - 1 1/2 bananas (depending on size)
  • 1 egg
  • 2 tablespoons water and a good oil
  • some parsley or (loved by dogs) lovage, but it tastes the dogs without these last two ingredients.

Preparation:

  1. Finely chop the banana with a fork and knead with the remaining ingredients. I add the semolina as the last ingredient. The dough is right when it is firm like a shortcrust pastry.
  2. From the dough I roll small strands, the smaller the treats are, the thinner the rolled "sausages". Then cut into about 1 cm pieces and spread loosely on a baking sheet.
  3. The treats are baked at about 160 ° C for 30 - 35 minutes. They should be really hard, even inside.

Recipe 2: Livery treacle with carrots

Ingredients:

  • 250 g liver (chicken / turkey / beef / pork) or 200 g liver sausage (do not add any oil)
  • 3 grated carrots (or a baby glass of carrot, then a little less milk)
  • 1 egg
  • 200 ml of milk
  • about 250 g spelled wholemeal flour
  • 60 g of oatmeal
  • 2 tablespoons good oil

Preparation:

  1. Puree the liver in a blender or with a wand until a sticky mass is formed (this step is unnecessary for liver sausage). Mix the oatmeal with the flour and knead with the remaining ingredients to a firm dough and process as in recipe 1.
  2. If the dough is too soft, that's basically nothing. Then simply spread the dough on a baking sheet and push it into the oven preheated to 180 ° C.
  3. When the dough was softer, about halfway through the baking time, use a knife to scrape break points into the dough, where the treats can subsequently be broken.
  4. The treats should bake for about 30 minutes, if necessary then leave to dry at about 100 ° C a bit until they are really hard. (Take one to the sample, because as long as the dough is still hot, the treats are still a bit soft, they only show if they are still soft after cooling down.)
  5. I pick up the treats in an open jar, they keep themselves well.

Have fun making and the dogs have fun in the Schnabel.
