Ancient recipes are not contemporary

Uromas and grandma's recipes are always highly praised, but they have often adapted to today's eating habits. Nobody would cook or bake many old original recipes.

Because 150 years ago, you processed eggs and fat in very large quantities! These were sumptuous meals for hard-working people and for holidays. But there were also recipes for frugal housewives and the sick. Old cookbooks speak of old times.

Cookbooks became more popular 150 years ago in middle-class families. Due to the industrial revolution and social change, eating habits had gradually changed. Many people had moved from the countryside to the city - they became wealthy and demanded fine food.

Sophie Scheibler called her work, which appeared in Leipzig, a general cookbook for all classes, an indispensable handbook for "housewives, housekeepers and cooks". In her opinion, culinary art should combine well-being, enjoyment and well-being. It is a textbook with lots of advice for the bourgeoisie.

The workers, however, had a harder time, because they had to live economically. The Workers' Welfare published a booklet titled "The Domestic Luck" with instructions for cooking for working women. It contained many suggestions on how to use the simplest ingredients to prepare nutritious dishes. In 1881 the first edition came out and within a year the book became a bestseller.

The most successful cookbook at the time was written by a home economics teacher from Westphalia. Henriette Davidis came from the rural area near Wuppertal and ran a girls' work school there. She had the courage to write down her tried and tested recipes and offer them to a publisher. The cookbook was published in 1844 and the "Davidis" became the most widely read cookbook author of her time. Her "Practical Cookbook" with 1464 recipes was available in many new editions and today it is much sought after by cookbook collectors.

My advice

If you want to bake old-fashioned, you can do that Brod cake with chocolate to attempt. 12 eggs, 3/8 pounds of sweetened sugar, 2 ounces of sweet chocolate, 1/8 ounce of cinnamon, grated lemon peel or a piece of sugar-crushed vanilla and 9 ounce old grated and sifted black brod. Have fun!
