Buy the right Christmas tree

Oh Christmas tree, oh Christmas tree? .What is the best for my Christmas dream? There is much offered, in very different price ranges. Let's see what Christmas trees there are, what to look for when buying and how to keep them optimally fresh.

Everything fir or what?

Not everything is fir, what's called that. Nordmann fir and noble fir (Nobilistannen) are some, while the so-called Rottanne is in reality a spruce. This is important to know, because spruces do not last as long as firs. How do you differentiate fir from spruce? Give it the old Rörsterspruch: "The spruce stings, not the fir." Spruces have harder and sharper needles. Most of the branches are needles around, while the fir has opposite needles. What we call pine cones also comes from the spruce? these hang on the branches and fall off altogether, while real pine cones stand upright on the branches and only lose scales. Firs have a smooth trunk and a very compact growth, as the trunk is covered to the ground with branches.

Details of Christmas tree species

Nordmann fir

By far the most expensive Christmas tree, as it grows very slowly. It takes about 15 years to reach room height! It has a very even growth, a smooth, unpadded stem (which some people do not like) and dark green, soft needles. The branches are quite strong and can also carry heavy Christmas tree decorations. Nordmann firs last a very long time, even after several weeks at room temperature they do not need to be needled.

Noble fir or Nobilistanne

Dark green to teal, soft needles, a slightly irregular growth and the most intense scent of all? the noble fir is priced at a height with the Nordmann fir and lasts for even longer.

Rotfichte

The red spruce is the cheapest offer on the Christmas tree market. However, it does not last long: At room temperature, the quite short needles (which, incidentally, quite stingy) fall already after a few days. Red spruces are usually grown quite irregular and the branches are thin, so you can attach only light weights to balls and angels.

blue spruce

Nice, but ouch. The round shimmering blue needled branches, the dense, uniform growth, the magnificent pine needles? the blue spruce is a medium-priced alternative to the "Rolls Royces" pine. Many is it under the name? Blue fir? but botanically it is a spruce, which is not without reason also called spruce. The needles are extremely hard and pointed, the trunk is also needled, so put on gloves when setting up! The blue spruce is perfect for very heavy Christmas tree decorations. Just like their price, their durability is in the midfield.

Pine trees

With up to 15 cm long needles and their unusual growth, the jaw is something for Christmas individualists. Your advantages: fragrance and durability!

Eyes on the Christmas tree purchase!

The ideal is, of course, if you can choose the tree directly before Christmas in a Christmas tree plantation and beat, but that usually has its price. Otherwise you should pay attention to regionality? So you have more the guarantee that the tree was not beaten weeks before, in this case, even a Nordmann fir ever loses the needles! Has a tree already lost the young needles from the branch tips, fingers away!

Bought tree and now?

Between buying and setting up the tree, it is best to store it in a cool, sheltered place, like in the basement or on the balcony. It is best to put it in a bucket of water and remove the transport network. In the room, the tree should not be possible next to the heater or an oven. Ideal is a Christmas tree stand with water tank. A large tree consumes about one liter of water in three days, so do not forget to add water. And that? Sharpening? you should refrain. Since the water transport in the tree happens directly under the bark, a peeled and sharpened trunk can no longer absorb water.

The tree in the pot

If you do not want to kill a tree every Christmas, you might decide for a tree in a pot or a bale. If you want to integrate the tree after the holidays in the garden, but there is a lot to consider: It is best to buy a tree that has already been cultivated in the pot. If it is first potted for sale, the risk of serious root damage is too great. Although he survives Christmas with flying colors, he does not grow anymore. You do not need to plant out-of-the-field cultivated Nordmann firs as these only form tap roots that were certainly damaged during excavation. The tree in the pot should give you some time to get used to it from the outside. A few days in the garage or in the cool hallway let him handle the shock of winter rest to summer room heat better. The same is true, of course, vice versa. A potted tree should not be in the room for more than 10 days. Do not forget to pour, otherwise it is vinegar with the planting out.
