Make the strippers yourself

A few years ago, the protective regulations regarding the paint strippers for us normal gasoline consumers have been changed. The paint strippers may only contain a certain percentage of lye. That's certainly good for people who do not have to pick up much.

But we have an old apartment with ten 2-meter-high doors and the associated frame! I was able to burn off a large part of the paint, but since the doors and frames have many profiles and glass inserts, I had to work with paint strippers.

The purchasable paint strippers were too lax for me, besides, I needed tons, as usually only one layer of paint went off - and we had some paint layers.

It was also a question of cost to think about how to get the paint down.

The caustic soda also gets paint down, I knew. But the stuff is once as liquid as water - rather unfavorable for the door frame. So you had to have a thickener? ago.

I have tried everything possible and plundered the kitchen and the workshop.

About paste, cornflour, cream stabilizer and flour everything was there. In part, everything has simply dissolved without visible success.

But we still had tons of fine waste left - that finally worked and has led to the desired result. A paste that also holds on the door frame and (almost) does not drip.

CAUTION: PLEASE WEAR GLOVES AND GLOVES WHILE MAKING THE BINDER AND WORKING WITH THE BREWER!

A strong lye is just as corrosive as a strong acid!

ingredients

  • 1 L of water
  • 100 g of caustic soda (sodium hydroxide - chemical: NaOH)
  • approx. 200 g fine wastepaper (wallpapering substrate)
  • Caustic soda and fine waste you get in the paint shop

manufacturing

  1. Always add caustic soda to the water - never vice versa!
  2. Put the water in a tall plastic container. Then gradually add the caustic soda.
  3. The chemical reaction will make the whole thing pretty warm.
  4. When the liquid has cooled, allow the fine waste to trickle in with stirring. It takes a moment for the fine waste to thicken. So first of all a little less.
  5. With 200 grams I have the consistency I want. However, this may vary depending on the manufacturer of the fine waste and depending on how thick you want the stripper.

Pickling

  1. Wear safety goggles and gloves. Cover everything or tap, which must not get a stripper.
  2. Apply strippers, wait - it's about 5 minutes for me - and scrape off.
  3. Important: After scraping, rinse off the leached area with vinegar water (one drop of vinegar essence in one liter of water). This neutralizes the remaining lye. And that also stinks a bit when lye and acid react with each other ...

Not every wood is resistant to lye. Maybe first try in a small place the self-made stripper. Oak will for example become darker. I did not notice any change in Kiefer.

To my warnings: There are no sturdy shoes ...

I once had only health workers and socks. I just missed a tiny drop next to it, until I noticed that my toe itches - in the sock had been burned by this one small drop a hole! Washed off the poor toe with plenty of water and creamed with healing ointment.

Since then I put on solid shoes. :-)
