Haiku? the shortest poem form in the world

I would like to introduce you today to the shortest form of poetry in the world: Haiku. Haikus are originally from Japan, but are now written worldwide. The short poems have some typical features that distinguish them? which you do not necessarily have to strictly follow.

Characteristics of haikus

Traditionally, haikus consist of three lines and a total of 17 syllables (5? 7? 5). However, most haiku poets have moved away from this strict form to focus more on the content. Otherwise, it quickly happens that words or sentences are artificially shortened or lengthened to meet the 17 syllables.

Haikus often deals with nature and seasons. The topics are contemporary and describe a concrete moment or sense impression. Feelings, however, are not specifically named. A haiku often leaves room for subjective and personal interpretations.

Two or three lines sometimes form a sentence together, but individual words can also be strung together. There is often a thematic or substantive "break"? between the first two and the last line, which makes you think and leaves an open end. Headlines and rhymes do not exist in the haiku poem form.

Poetic freedom

Basically, you can decide how much you want to comply with the "rules". like to hold. The main thing is that you enjoy writing. Haikus are a great way for beginners to try their hand, since they are very short and do not have to rhyme.

Example of a haiku

sunset
The shining faces
Fade again

(Udo Wenzel)

This haiku takes up the relation to nature and shows the snapshot of a perception. The content break between the radiant sunset and the fading faces is recognizable and well conceivable for me.

Why you should write haikus

There are many reasons to dare to write haiku.

  • It is fun
  • It's easy, because haikus do not rhyme and they are so short
  • You can express your feelings without having to name them specifically
  • One can calm down and escape the hectic everyday life for a moment, as one consciously focuses on oneself and one's thoughts
  • You create something unique that stays. You can hold on to a special moment and process sensory impressions.

A few haikus who are a bit out of line.

The red wine is dripping
On the fresh blouse
Now only mum helps

Outflow clogged
The pots are baked
You need baking soda

How do I use
My leftovers from the day before
Ask Mum

Write your own haikus in the comments if you feel like it and willing to share them. :-)
