Make fringes on the scarf

I have ordered great pure silk online, to make a scarf in finally the length I want and also width to sew. That alone is not a problem, but instead of a hem, I wanted to make fringes on both Schmalenden that arise from the fabric, so not in the form of a purchased fringe sewn.

In the activity described below, only the warp threads remain, which in their total length as fringes hang loose out of the complete fabric downwards!

That's how it's done:

  • Cut the narrow edge of the fabric exactly at right angles to the selvage so that the fringes are the same length.
  • (Presumably only) on a longitudinal edge the selvedge carefully oblique weg- / cut off (the weft threads, which is in 3., here are very strong interwoven and hinder).

Now it starts really:

  1. From the center of the narrow edge, with a pin from the fabric, pull out / loosen 2 wefts a little and then pull the threads completely to the right and left from this point. If they tear, then at another point remove again as a small piece ... Please do not try first to pull the weft threads from a longitudinal edge ago as a whole, that usually does not work, because the thread is then too long and easily tearing .. ,
  2. Now come the next two weft threads on it ...
  3. Depending on the type of binding and the strength of the individual weft, the procedure works with 1, 2 or more threads - please try each one.
  4. If the length / height of the fringes has "reached" the obliquely cut selvage, then cut them off again at an angle ...
  5. Every now and then: Lay the scarf around the shoulders before sewing a final cross seam / drape as desired later and consider the fringe length in proportion to the total scarf length (the longer the scarf, the longer the fringe). Depending on your needs, finish the fraying or continue to linger a bit ...
  6. If only about 5 weft threads have to be pulled out, above this now sew parallel to the weft threads = right angle to the selvage with the sewing machine a very narrow zigzag seam, to prevent unwillingly unwrapping even more wefts above the later than last weft pulled out and disturb the overall impression. Please use exactly matching top thread and bobbin thread, so that this seam does not stand out, but blends harmoniously into the overall picture.

I just remembered:

If thicker than silk threads, the remaining warp threads should still be artfully intertwined (for creatives a pleasure), make the length of the fringes correspondingly larger ...

Will later add photos - please have a look!

Have fun trying it out - the success is definitely an eye-catcher!
