Indian? British? Both! Chicken tikka masala is one of the best known Indian dishes. It has its origin in England!

On my long search for a chicken tikka masala recipe, which tastes almost like my favorite child in England, I found a few years ago and now I would like to share this with you:

Ingredients for the marinade

  • 6 tablespoons natural yoghurt 1.5%
  • 2-3 cm of fresh ginger, finely chopped
  • 1 clove of garlic, fine cubes
  • 1 teaspoon lemon juice
  • 1 tsp turmeric
  • 1 teaspoon chilli powder or? Flakes
  • 1 teaspoon cumin (cumin), ground
  • 1 teaspoon coriander, ground

Preparation of marinade

  1. Mix everything together in a bowl.
  2. Cut 4 chicken breasts into bite sized pieces and add to the marinade. Everything should be well covered.
  3. The whole leaves then covered for 24 hours in the refrigerator.

For the next day

  • 2 teaspoons of oil (best taste-neutral, definitely not olive oil!)
  • 1 onion, diced
  • 2-3 cm of fresh ginger, finely chopped
  • 2 garlic cloves, fine cubes
  • 1 teaspoon chilli powder or flakes
  • 1 teaspoon cumin (cumin), ground
  • 1 teaspoon coriander, ground
  • 4 tablespoons tomato paste
  • salt
  • maybe a small dash of cream and 150 ml coconut milk (to taste)

preparation

  1. Heat a large pan with the oil, fry the onions over a medium heat until they are glassy.
  2. Add garlic and ginger and mix everything, do not let the garlic brown (become bitter).
  3. Add the tomato puree and stir well.
  4. Then add the marinated meat including marinade to the pan and mix well, so that everything has mixed together reasonably evenly.
  5. At medium heat, the pan contents should simmer for about 10 minutes with a lid. Stir in between. Take care that enough liquid remains. If in doubt, add some water.
  6. Switch to low heat and season with salt.
  7. Now it's up to you if the sauce tastes so good and is enough or not. If you like coconut milk, you can add it now and let it boil again (or until the meat is through). Tastes really good? But if you want to omit them, that's no problem. If necessary add some cream.

Serve with cooked rice and / or naan bread. Even a delicious chutney is doing very well! Enjoy the meal!
