Dehumidifier cushion for the car - always reusable

Studded car windows are particularly dangerous and frequent in autumn and winter. With shoes and clothes you carry a lot of moisture into the car, which also does not disappear completely when you heat while driving and open windows. Although a dehumidifier has already been introduced at TheFruitAndFlowerBasket, it works with charcoal that, once wet, can not be regenerated. In addition, the production of charcoal is ecologically very questionable.

In bags, electrical and photographic equipment are often small bags filled with silicate crystals to protect against moisture. Even in food packs you will find these dehumidifiers occasionally.

After my purchased dehumidifier pillows, also filled with silicate crystals, broke down after a relatively short period of use (the fleece cover is torn), and I did not want to spend another 20 euros for two pillows, I decided to make such pillows myself - with stable shell.

You need:

  • Silicate crystals, available as Silica cat litter (3.4 kg for the 8.50 Euro) in the pet shop
  • Cotton fabric, tight and tight woven, but not too thick (I used a discarded percale duvet cover)
  • sewing thread
  • sewing machine

From the fabric, I have cut two strips of cloth each 60 cm in length and 25 cm in width, folded each strip of fabric right to right along the length. Along the opening longitudinal edge and a narrow side, the two fabric halves are stitched together with a narrow straight stitch, the edges are still zigzag stitched and secured against fraying.

The resulting fabric tube is now turned to the right and filled with about 30 tablespoons full of silicate crystals and can be collected in the lower part of the fabric tube. About half the length of the fabric tube is a cross-seam, dividing the tube in half. In the second, still empty half you fill more silicate crystals, the same amount, as in the lower half.

Now the upper edges of the tube are slightly turned inwards and the opening is sewn shut. Now you distribute the crystals evenly in the two chambers of the fabric tube. The central cross seam prevents the crystals from slipping to one side.

The fabric hose should not be filled with too much silicate, otherwise it does not cling to the ground and dries too slowly. The tube shape is ideal to put the pillow on the dashboard (of course not while driving!).

With two cushions you have the opportunity to do a dry job in the car, while the other one dries again on a radiator (or even in the oven if necessary).

The expensive fridge-dehumidifying pillows can be made in this way, too. Buy now ThoMar Air Dry Auto Dehumidifier | Air dehumidifier with high moisture absorption | Protects from bes? ThoMar Air Dry Auto Dehumidifier | Air dehumidifier with high moisture absorption | Protects from bes? 9,59 ?
