Employ hamsters

Here are some ideas for keeping your hamster busy:

General:

  • Most important, of course, is a reasonably sized cage and tall litter so the hamster can dig and build aisles. I have had good experiences with hemp litter. He is a bit more expensive, but low in dust and my hamster likes him.
  • Also very important is a good (!) Hamster wheel. It should be big enough not to cause postural damage and have no bars. The hamster can otherwise pinch and break a leg or worse.
  • If you buy houses, tunnels or the like online, it is recommended for rats or degus. Unfortunately, hamsters can not fit in where hamsters appear.

Some employment ideas:

  1. Do not simply place the feed (except fresh food) in the feeding bowl. It can be distributed in a cage, easily buried, and hidden in and around cottages and tunnels. In hamsters who are not used to looking for the food, but should be checked whether he has found it. Maybe put it around the bowl first and then increase the difficulty.
  2. Fresh food can be put on special bars, which can be placed or hung up by means of a pedestal. So the hamster has a bit of work. In the photo you can see a purchased for hanging, you can do such a rod but also yourself. Instructions are available on the Internet.
  3. Buddelkiste: Take a box and fill it with torn handkerchiefs or toilet paper. It is important that the paper is not dyed or has been treated with smell or something. Then hide a bit of food under the handkerchiefs. My hamster also needs the paper to build the nest or just bunk it.
  4. In between, my hamster gets a whole carrot. He's busy trying to make it into the house :) Just remember to take it out when it gets bad.
  5. Something that always goes down well with Hamsti is a bit of meadow. Collect grass, daisies and dandelion leaves and put them in a box in the cage. To scurry and eat. The plants should of course be free of dog or cat pippi. Every now and then a few branches are great too. But please first read on the Internet, which trees or shrubs are suitable.
  6. Cardboard can also be easily put together a maze. I then fill the various chambers with various litter and handkerchiefs and hide some food. Basically, of course, it is also important to give the hamster a safe and varied spout, if he likes it.

Now I wish you much fun with your Hamstis and hope that one or the other can start with the ideas. If you still have tips, I'm looking forward to reading!
