Beginner Easter egg in Tjanting technique

A tjanting is a very small wax pot on a stalk, which is dipped in molten wax. The hot wax runs through a spout. In the seventies and eighties this batik technique was very popular. You can not only paint on fabric with the Tjanting, but also on blown eggs.

The technique is simple: in a small potty you melt wax, dip the Tjanting, holding the device at an angle and dripping the hot wax on the object to be decorated. To practice the technique you drip dots on the eggs or paint strokes. I heat the wax on the stove and put the potty on a warmer with a tealight.

When heating, be careful that the wax does not get too hot and burns! Always have a pot lid lying there. If it happens, so as to choke the flame. This has never happened to anyone - so do not worry!

As soon as it is liquid, the wax comes on the warmer. Now we have an egg with solidified wax drops. This comes in a dye bath of your choice - everything goes, but it must be cold paint, which is colorfast, so sticks with the following wash.

Once the egg is colored, it is taken out, dried and washed hot - this melts the wax and you have a colorful egg with white polka dots. Lightly oil, done.

That would be the novice Easter egg in this Tjanting technique. If you have practiced something and with practice you can make beautiful drawings!

If all this seems too difficult for you: You can cover a whole egg with wax, then let it cool and then scrape patterns with needles of different thicknesses - and then put in a dark cold bath. And wash off hot again.

When batiking fabric, you iron out the wax at the end - this is unfortunately not possible with eggs.

It makes a lot of fun! By the way, you get tjanting and batik wax in the art supplies or craft shop.
