Crochet patchwork from old laundry

During the spring cleaning I cleaned out the cabinets and found some laundry, which was too shabby even for the collection of old clothes. Among them were some favorite pieces that are difficult to part with, because there are so many memories of them: worn-out, holey sheets, tattered T-shirts, torn, faded curtains. That's why I wanted to give the rags a second life with us as a patchwork quilt.

Here at TheFruitAndFlowerBasket, there are already some useful tips with comments on how to make something new from it.

In the tip yarn from old T-shirts make yourself, is how to make the longest possible thread from a T-shirt: //www.thefruitandflowerbasket.com/garn-aus-alten-t-shirts-selber-machen-diy -a49489 /.

In the tip upcycling for curtains, the idea of crocheting a round carpet is explained: //www.thefruitandflowerbasket.com/upcycling-for- curtains-bathroom-piles-a48142/

Also in the tip quilted carpet itself is explained how to cut fabrics and crochet rag rugs. //www.thefruitandflowerbasket.com/flickenteppich-selbst-gehaekelt-a25026/

And here's how to crochet bicoloured spirals: //www.thefruitandflowerbasket.com/browncolour-spiral-hooking-felt-topflaps-a-45658/

From all these tips, I have now made a new one: two-tone rag rug from old dark blue curtain fabric and light blue tensioning sheet.

You need

  • about 1 kg bicoloured rags (old laundry) z. B.
    • light blue fitted sheet for 1m x 2m
    • dark blue loop scarf 1,40m x 2,40m
  • Crochet hook thickness 12
  • good scissors

I have made sure that both fabrics are 100% cotton. Since both pieces of laundry have been washed many times, the colors will not bleed and there will be no more washing. If someone wants to take new scraps, then please wash as hot as allowed before.

Cut the sheet into yarn

Fine knit terry

The tension sheet is made of fine knit terry. Since sheets are usually well preserved outside and become thinner in the middle, because they are worn out, I cut the sheet spirally. If you cut such a sheet in a zigzag, then alternately good and bad spots come into the yarn and that makes further processing difficult. With spiral cutting you can adjust the yarn thickness slowly. The thinner the sheet becomes in the middle, the wider the stripes that are cut from it. With a sheet, I could not use the middle, so worn out it was. The first round was the hem with the rubber band. Since the rubber band was sewn to the fabric, so it was not guided in a fabric tunnel and was removable, I just left it. The thickness of the first round was then clue for the further rounds. I cut strips as wide as I wanted to process them with a 12 crochet hook. The strips were about 5 cm (= 3 fingers) wide. Those who only have a thinner crochet hook will cut thinner strips. I cut across seams and holes. After all, the yarn rolls in anyway anyway, so that it does not stand out later, at least less noticeable, than a newly started thread. Picture 2 shows how wide the strips are cut, depending on whether a hem or a rubber band is there or not. Frotteestoff fuselt unfortunately when cutting very strong, the finished carpet fuselages fortunately no longer.

Woven fabrics

At the curtain, I first cut off the loops. The curtain fabric is woven. I could do that wonderfully? tear (picture 3). Again, I went spiraling. and always started with the scissors first a strip and then tore to just before the corner. Then you have to cut at right angles around the corner and can continue to tear just before the next corner (Figure 4). The tearing protects the hand, goes much faster and the stripes are more even. The resulting corners in the yarn can be rounded off a bit with scissors. Again, I have the entire curtain with hem and seams processed (except for the loops). The strip width must be adjusted accordingly, depending on whether the fabric at the hem is double or in the middle simply.

Figure 9 shows the resulting yarn balls.

Crochet bicolor spirals (Photo 5)

How to crochet in two-tone spirals I have already explained here once.

  • Before the first round, crochet in half in one half in the other color (three sts at the beginning).
  • For each half round, three fixed loops are distributed in increments, that is, at the beginning in each stitch, then every other second, then every third, and so on
  • When changing colors, you just lay one color down, so you always have one stitch per color to work on (Picture 6 and 7)

Crochet rag yarn

The processing of this rag yarn is not easy and takes much more effort than normal wool. To protect the crochet hand, I formed the stitches with both hands. So with the left hand, the thread out and with the right hand the needle. Then the right hand does not have to pull the thread with all its strength.

In addition, I have not stabbed in the entire fixed loop of the preliminary round, but only in the upper loop. This can be seen on picture 8. To stab in this way is much easier, it looks more beautiful and the carpet becomes flatter and thus faster bigger. The carpet gets such a front and a back. When crocheting make sure that? Bad? If possible, place yarn spots on the backside.

The irregular yarn can be compensated by tighter or loose crochet. I did not always count exactly when I was growing, but kept laying the carpet over and over to check that I had really gained weight. If you have not gained enough weight, the carpet bulges like a cap, if you have increased too much, it curls like a valance. When an increase is necessary, you quickly get into the feeling.

attach new thread

When a thread is over and a new thread of the same color is to be applied, I simply turned the strips of fabric into each other. If it gets too thick, then cut the thread end, which comes inward, pointed.

graduation

When the yarn is almost used up, crochet a few warp stitches instead of tight stitches and simply weave in the remaining thread. (Picture 1 above).

How much rug does a sheet make?

On picture 5 you can see how much yarn I got from a sheet for a 1x 2 meter mattress and a loop scarf. Since I still have a second loop scarf and another sheet, I do a quantity comparison on pictures 10 and 11. I have the little ball of the dark blue loop scarf left over. The finished carpet has a diameter of about 55 cm. From the material that is still available, I can once again crochet such a carpet or enlarge the existing one.

But I have to negotiate with my cat first. She thinks that I should finally stop taking pictures and leave her alone with the carpet. ;-)
