Frozen lake or pond: Creating a drinking point for animals

The lake or pond is frozen too thick, but you want to create a hole, so that remains a drinking place for the animals?

Just put a stone on it, or a handful of sand. The darker, the better. On the one hand, the sun warms dark substances and thus helps with thawing; on the other hand, the weight of an object acts on the ice. It creates a Taustelle. So never stay in a place with skates for 5 hours ...?

Stones or sand do not hurt, unlike salt z. B. The resulting hole then has to be "maintained", otherwise it freezes naturally.
