General information about water bubbling
How does a water bubbler work?
Carbon dioxide is a cheap, non-toxic gas. Its combination with water produces carbon dioxide, which gives tap water its tingling, slightly sour taste. A pressurized gas cylinder located on the back of a water bubbler is filled with this carbon dioxide in food grade quality under high pressure only. A water bottle, which must be inserted in front of such a device, is filled with tap water. By pressing a button, the CO2 is led out of the cartridge into the bottle. By pressing a CO2 button, you can also regulate the carbonation in the water itself.

The ? Crystal? from SodaStream is a stylish, modern drinking water bubbler, which can boast a stable construction and robust. When first unpacking the water bubbler had no chemical smell. He is easy to use. Produced is the? Crystal? mainly made of plastic, but its decanter cup with integrated and comfortable decanter holder is made of stainless steel. The device is relatively large in comparison to the other test devices, while still saving space. He does not take up more space than a standard coffee machine. The water bubbler works completely without electricity, but a CO2 cylinder is used, which brings the mechanism in motion. A CO2 cartridge is delivered with the device in the packaging, which means you do not have to buy separately. Also right there: A great glass carafe. It is dishwasher safe and spares according to Kunststoffbeigeschmack. Glass bottles have one more advantage: They have no expiry date compared to PET bottles, which means that they can be used longer with regular cleaning. The glass carafe can be wonderfully put on the table as it looks really good.
We were able to assemble the water sprinkler easily, even though we have never done it before. First, we introduced the CO2 cylinder on the back. Mounting the cylinder will not be a problem if you have the manual at hand. The step-by-step pictures in the instruction manual make life easier for you! Next, we rinsed the glass bottle with cold water and filled it to the mark. Then we put them in the carafe container. The container is a very practical part of the bubbler: annoying Screwing the bottle is no longer necessary! Thanks to the carafe holder, the bottle sits firmly in the container.
With the bubbling of the water it worked quite well with us. The device is bubbling really well. To bubble, you have to push the carbonation button several times quite strong, until you hear a dull sound. You decide for yourself what kind of effervescent effect you want. The amount of carbonic acid in the water depends on your pressure intensity on the button. Do not exceed more than five humming tones!
After bubbling, we were able to clean the device quickly. The worktop was still completely dry. There were only a few drops of water in the bottom of the container, which we removed with a lint-free, dry cloth. The bubbler itself we wiped with a slightly damp cloth and allowed to dry. To clean the glass carafe, it was sufficient to scrub the carafe with a bottle brush and then rinse with clear water from the tap. Just like the water bubbler itself, we let the bottle dry in the air. The fact that the carafe is made of glass, it remains hygienic with regular cleaning in the dishwasher and does not become a germ spinner!
Carbonated result:
When? Crystal? We have repeatedly pressed the water bubblers on the button at short intervals until we have reached a maximum of 5 buzzer sounds (maximum buzzing sounds according to the instructions for the strongest sparkling effect).
- Tap water directly from the faucet: The water has been bubbled really strong. It was very sparkling and refreshing? just the thing for lovers of strong tingling water. Because of the strong sparkling effect, it tasted very intense and slightly more bitter than we expected. But it had no plastic taste thanks to the glass bottle
- Tap water after cooling in the refrigerator: On the second try, we put tap water in the fridge for 30 minutes. The instructions say that you can get the best result from the previous cooling of the water. After cooling, the water was strongly bubbled just like the first time. This time it was really pleasant and cool, the slight bitter taste was not there.
Criticism:
However, the water bubbler also has a few minor quirks. The first point deduction is made because the purchase price of the device is quite high compared to the other test models. But you get correspondingly better quality! With a weight of about 2.5 kg, the? Crystal? no flyweight. The glass bottle is also quite heavy. Together with the CO2 cylinder and the glass carafe, the device is not exactly easy to carry. However, one has to say: Once the bubbler is in place, that is not relevant. The buzzer sounded very loud and shrill during the test.Not for sensitive ears! Even a small minus gets the "Crystal"? but also for his glass bottle: The glass bottle could be a bit bigger: Unfortunately, 0.6 liter capacity is not very much, especially for people who drink a lot in everyday life. And as described above, a bottle of glass is very fragile. Therefore, please pay attention to how you handle your glass bottle or ordered from the outset one with insulating jacket!

The SodaStream? Easy? is a budget bubbler, which is significantly cheaper than our first test copy. Despite a lower price he makes a robust and really stylish impression. The device is made of visually attractive, white plastic. Also, this bubbler from SodaStream did not let unpleasant plastic odor when unpacking. The? Easy? is easy to handle. The device itself is also very light, small and space saving. It takes up very little space. You can even take it to your car on your vacation - that's how easy the model is! The Wassersprudler is also a CO2 cylinder and requires no electricity. The water bubbler is used with BPA-free PET bottles. The PET bottles are very practical and lightweight, so you can even take them outside. In addition, they are more stable and almost unbreakable. Especially important when children are in the house. Compared to glass bottles from the previous model, the PET bottles have an expiration date. You should stick to this date and then stop using the bottle. Our bottle says that it is stable until October 2020. We think: This is a reasonable exchange period. But a thorough cleaning is also required here, so that the bottle keeps its good condition until the expiration date.
The functioning of the bubbler was very easy for us to understand. We also used the CO2 cartridge at the very back, just like the "Crystal". With the help of the manual and the pictures we have done the installation of the cylinder very quickly. Then we rinsed the PET bottles with warm water and filled them exactly to the filling line with cold tap water. The bottle we just pressed into the bubbler. The new one-click system makes it easier to handle the bottles, even for children and the elderly, this is no longer a problem. We once happened that we filled the water bottle with too much water and did not push the bottle properly into the bottle holder , During the spattering, the water spurted out. Therefore, you fill your PET bottle really only up to the line and introduces the open bottle correctly (according to the instructions) in the bubbler, so you do not run any application errors.
In the? Easy? SodaStream can also be used to dose carbon dioxide in desired quantities at the push of a button. The water bubbler fulfills every wish, no matter how much the water should be bubbled. For bubbling the water, we kept the bubble button pressed down until we heard the sound three times. The? Pfft? Sound from the? Easy? is much quieter and a bit more pleasant for the ears than the "Crystal". We recommend that you take out the bottle with the finished bubbled water very slowly and carefully! Otherwise, the water splashes and spills out a bit, if you try it by force.
We accurately pulled out the PET bottle so that it hardly dripped onto the bottom of the device. Nevertheless, we wiped the bubbler with a dry cloth and put it aside. The bottle was rinsed with the same bottle brush and tap water and allowed to dry. Both the device and the bottle looked like new after drying!

In the? Easy? We kept the water bubbler pressed until we reached the maximum 3 buzzer sounds (maximum buzzer sounds according to the instructions for the strongest bubble effect)
- Tap water directly from the faucet: Compared to the? Crystal? is the soda from the? Easy? not so strong bubbled. For us it was the perfect taste of the perfect amount of carbon dioxide: very pleasant, fresh and not at all bitter. In addition, the water had no aftertaste, even though these bottles are made of plastic.
- Tap water after cooling in the refrigerator: We also tested the device with chilled water. In this case, it tastes a bit bitter and intense than before. Exactly the other way around than the "Crystal".
Criticism:
Of course, we also want you on the model? Easy? the disadvantages are not withheld. While not as fragile as glass bottles, PET bottles can become unhygienic over time faster than their glass counterparts.They are not suitable for the dishwasher and therefore more susceptible to bacteria. Especially if you drink your water with syrup, you should then better use special cleaning tablets to eliminate all possible deposits. There is something else that bothered us a bit in the device: The bottle did not seem to be hung properly in the bottle holder. Especially at the beginning of the test we checked this place again and again, because we were unsure if the bottle was actually installed correctly. Nothing happened, but it still left uncertainty with us every time.

Not only SodaStream, but also other manufacturers offer water sprinklers. For example, the German company? Rosenstein § sons ?. The Wassersprudler von Rosenstein § sons immediately catches the eye. Its design looks very nice and stylish, unfortunately, the whole device is made entirely of plastic. When unpacking the bubbler had, as well as the other test models, no specific smell heard. It is easy to use and not very heavy. The device is slightly larger than the? Easy? from SodaStream, but smaller than the "Crystal". It saves space and is suitable for every room and every taste thanks to its elegant design. It is also independent of power and comes with a nice design PET bottle.
The operation of the water bubbler is generally easy to understand. Apart from the fact that after tightening the CO2 cartridge, we could attach the rear cover to the hook only after a few attempts. The carafe-shaped 1 liter PET bottle was first rinsed off and then placed in the water bubbler. Unlike the other bottles in this test, this bottle has 2 markings:? Max? and? Min ?. The important thing is that you do not undercut or exceed these 2 marks! Screwing the PET bottle into the device worked really fast. The bottle was really screwed tight, that we did not even care that it could suddenly fall down.
After all the equipment was completely equipped by us with all necessary, we started with the water bubbling. The Wassersprudler Rosenstein § sons also makes it possible to choose the desired sparkling intensity itself. We pressed the bubble button vigorously until we were sure the water was bubbling enough. The water had finished bubbling and the bottle could be removed.
When unscrewing the water bottle, a few drops have run down, so that the bottom of the device was quite wet. But it was not too bad, because we could quickly remove the puddle with a dry cloth. With the same cloth, we have cleaned the whole unit easily, so that it even shone after. The water is only dripped down to the device, next to it there were no drops. We cleaned the one liter PET bottle with the water and our brush. After cleaning, we let the clean bottle dry in the air. So it's much better than trying a cloth. This avoids stains on the bottles.
Carbonated result:
The operating instructions do not contain any information as to how many times the process may be repeated at most. That's why in this case we have bubbled the water to our personal taste. At the Rosenstein § Söhne water bubbler we first pressed down the bubbler lever 5 times. The water was rather "medium"? bubbled. Then we pressed the lever 7 times for about 2 seconds, so that we get a lot of bubbled water. So we could compare fairly with the other models.
- Tap water directly from the faucet: The sparkling water from this bubbler was just as strong as the "Easy"? bubbled, not as strong as the "Crystal". The water was also very refreshing, but had a slightly bitter aftertaste, which was probably due to the carbonation. The water had no plastic taste, even though it was bubbled in a PET bottle.
- Tap water after cooling in the refrigerator: The sparkling water from the previously cooled water had the similar slightly bitter taste, as from the water coming directly from the faucet. The bitter note was barely noticeable and therefore not disturbing.
Criticism:
The black and chic model of Rosenstein § sons offers a great design. Too bad that his workmanship is not terrific. Especially when attaching the rear cover, we noticed how fragile the attachment hooks are. In our attempts to reinstate the cover, we always had the feeling that the hooks will not survive. In addition, it has stunk heavily when removing the rear cover from the inside for plastic.Over time, the stench has fallen sharply, in the back of the head you still have this smell. Another shortcoming is that the PET bottles from this company are not BPA-free and that there is no expiration date. Since one usually has no idea until when they are valid, one should rely on one's own gut feeling here. Just like the bottles of the "SodaSteam" Easy ?, these PET bottles are only suitable for hand washing. Again, as with any plastic bottle, you can not exclude germs or other burdens. That is why it is very important to care for and cleanse your bubblers and bottles so that they stay hygienic and clean longer! The biggest drawback of this water bubbler is that no gas cylinder is included in the packaging. That's why the water bubbler from Roseinstein § sons is not a real bargain, as you should also order an additional CO2 cylinder separately. In the end, you definitely end up not only at 39.90 euros, but at almost 70 euros (along with a gas cylinder). What is also missing this device is a more detailed information on how often you should press on the bubbler lever to get different carbon dioxide intensities. First of all, you have to try the device a few times to find out how often you should press the bubble button for different water types.
Our test result:
Due to its robustness, its design and its functionalities we find the model "Easy". best from SodaStream. Even for those water connoisseurs, who place the price as the main criterion, the Budget water bubbler? Easy? very good because of its value for money. It also produces to our taste more pleasant, tingling and refreshing sparkling water, is very light and relatively space-saving. Of all the 3 water bubblers we tested, would we give you the SodaStream? Easy? recommend! But: tastes are different. Maybe one of the other devices convinced you. Write us in the comments!
Where do you change an empty CO2 cylinder?
Quite often SodaStream CO2 cylinders are included in the packaging when you buy a device. Regrettably, the CO2 cartridge is not available for the Rosenstein § Söhne water bubbler, so you should order a suitable CO2 cartridge at the same time. Especially recommended for Rosenstein & Söhne water bubbler WS-100.Soda this gas cylinder: Gas cylinder especially for Rosenstein & sons. The CO2 cylinders from SodaStream are also compatible: SodaStream Reserve Cylinder.
The SodaStream CO2 cylinders can be exchanged at numerous supermarkets. These include, among others, DM, Rossmann, Müller, Real, Edeka, Rewe, Kaufland, Media Markt / Saturn, Metro and Galeria Kaufhof. Refilling or exchanging an empty CO2 cylinder costs about 8.99 euros. The other above-mentioned gas cylinder, which can be used in the water bubbler by Rosenstein & Söhne, is also available in Germany and cheap. You just have to contact the PEARL customer service. They will tell you exactly where a replacement or refill is feasible.
