AMD? the unknown eye disease

AMD is the abbreviation of "age-related macular degeneration". A difficult word. In short, from 60 sharp vision deteriorates. At 80, a dark spot could severely restrict vision. I have informed myself about it. Why? Because my mother is sick. And she does everything in order to best care and protect her sick eye.

As she got older, my mother was happy with her eyes. Because her shortsightedness was lower! She could always read without glasses. Suddenly she had problems with it. "Now I need a reading glasses !? she whined and went to the ophthalmologist. Then the shock. A reading glasses brings nothing. She has AMD. For this purpose, special investigations were made, for which they had to pay 120 euros.

My mother is a fighter, especially in her health. Immediately she told the diagnosis to her friends at the coffee and cake meeting. One of them is a doctor and she came up with an amazing tip: Immediately drop the glass of wine in the evening. Alcohol and smoking are poison for the eye! All the wine bottles were disposed of with a great deal of shouting. And I had to promise her not to touch a drop of alcohol anymore. Because I could have inherited the disease from her. Besides, she does not want to watch me having a nice drink in the evening and she has to watch. I did not like it that much. But actually logical. It's easier to do without alcohol when your closest relatives and friends do the same. Now you know how the anti-alk topic started with me. That was over 10 years ago.

AMD is a serious illness that develops very slowly. Fortunately, my mother has only one diseased eye, the other is slightly short-sighted and otherwise healthy. It now takes on many visuals that the sick eye no longer has. There are no medications that can explain the decay of Sharp vision stop or cure. Certain dietary supplements can probably relieve. My mother should then every month for 45 euros to get such funds from her ophthalmologist. She did not care. And then it started.

She got information and interviewed doctors, she just wanted to know. She has found various measures and they have proven themselves. Her eye with AMD has only got a little bit worse. She can do anything, but she has to be careful in the dark. Here are her tips:

Eat eye-friendly foods regularly

  • Spinach, kale, tomatoes, broccoli, corn, egg yolks, green beans, leeks, peas, parsley, peppers, fennel, sauerkraut.
  • Herring, mackerel, tuna, salmon, cod, redfish.
  • Vitamin C-containing fruits especially tangerines, blueberries, peach, papaya.

Protect eyes from UV light!

UV light is dangerous. Never expose your eyes unprotected to this radiation! My mother always wears a UV light protective cap when it's sunny. It helps enormously. You put it on like a hairband. The protective screen is movable and can sometimes be pushed upwards. A lanyard is there to remove the cap without putting it in the bag.

Every day an eye bath with herbal tea? Eyebright?

Eyebright is great. The infusion is done (very important): 1 teaspoon of eyebright in a saucepan with 1 glass of water. Get hot, DO NOT cook! Let it rest for 10 minutes. Then drain through a cloth. There must be no particles in the tea. Let cool down. Fill an eye bath and press firmly on the eye. To keep the other eye open the eye in the small tub. Sometimes blink. For 10 to 20 seconds.

Using aids: magnifying glasses and light

My mother needs very good light for reading and handicrafts. Since the blue part in the saving bulbs is not good for AMD eyes, she has kept the old bulbs. Then she uses a loupe. She has made her optician special with their values. Cost: 200 euros. An investment that has proven itself. Reading with the magnifying glass in the hand is uncomfortable. When she is on the road, she has a high-quality hand-held magnifier (with light). B. to decipher the ingredients on the food packaging.

What remains is the hope that this eye disease can be kept at bay, so to speak. And that does not mean worse. There are 2 types of AMD. Most people with AMD suffer from the dry form. A few get wet AMD. That's like liver cirrhosis after liver inflammation. So bad.
