Beer as a hair fixative
My mother always used to turn my hair on. So that I had something longer, I got hair fixer, which did not get unpleasantly in the nose: Beer! It did not matter if old or dark beer, you did not smell it after drying and it worked great!
My mother had always filled a glass up to the level of the comb teeth of the stem, so she could moisten it with the beer and go through the hair before it was rolled on the winder.
Afterwards she could drink the rest, and I was allowed to help her with the dark beer.
