Everything to howl?

In short, in advance: It is in the following article is not a tip for better crying, even more about how to avoid crying. Also the removal of tear stains from sensitive textiles will not matter. Which means: There are no tips at all. The only concern of this text is to convey interesting facts about the phenomenon of weeping.

Women cry. Men too.

Hand on heart: When did you cry the last time? And why? When asked this question in the real life of a representative sample of people, it quickly becomes clear that women cry more often than men. Or is it perhaps easier for them to admit it?

Man is the only living thing on this planet that cries emotional tears. The trigger for the salty drops are cultural rules and hormones that give the wines an evolutionary meaning. Tears are often treacherous and the attempt to hide them usually does not go unnoticed. They reveal the emotional state of a person directly and directly. Someone who cries is sad or touched, angry, happy or just desperate. Of course this only applies to real tears. Played tears, popularly also? Crocodile tears? called, are usually an attempt to manipulate counterpart.

Different types of tears

Besides the already mentioned "emotional tears"? There are two other forms of tears that differ in cause and composition.

  • Reflective tears are triggered by an external external influence. This happens, for example, when cutting onions when smoke disturbs the eye or in strong draft.
  • Basal tears have a protective function, they keep the eye moist and clean it.

Tear fluid basically consists of water, electrolytes, enzymes, lipids, metabolites and proteins. However, these components occur in the individual tear forms in different proportions. For example, reflex tears, as triggered by the irritant gas released from onions from sulfur compounds, have a significantly higher water content than emotional tears.

Crying in numbers and facts

The Society for Consumer Research surveyed 2,000 people aged 14 and over about their wine behavior. According to this, two-thirds of all Germans have cried tears of real tears at least once in the past 12 months. At 83 percent, the women are clearly ahead. Just over half, 43 percent of men said they cried last year. As a reason for the tears the following points were mentioned most often:

  • Loss of a close person
  • Quarrel in the partnership
  • Exhaustion and stress
  • physical pain
  • touching movie scenes
  • Anger and desperation
  • happiness and luck

Somewhat more specific was demanded in a study of the German Ophthalmological Society (DOG). The Ophthalmology Society wanted to hear exact numbers and found that men cry six to 17 times, women up to 64 times a year. It is not without reason that in both studies the lower age limit was set at 14 years: until the age of thirteen, boys and girls still cry equally frequently. Scientists suspect that puberty is the beginning of the production of the milk-producing hormone prolactin, a cause of the more frequent emotional outbreaks of girls from this age.

Finally, the rather interesting results of a study by the Dutch research center TNO, according to which most often in wealthy countries is cried. TNO researchers attribute this to a higher level of tolerance and greater freedom of expression. In Sweden and Brazil, the most crying women live, while in Italy there are the majority of crying men. Germany ranks third in this tearful ranking.

Why do women cry more often than men?

Women begin to sob when Clint Eastwood and Meryl Streep in the movie "The Bridges on the River? do not find each other. Men shed tears when the German national team flies out at the Football World Cup. Cliché or fact? Of course, there are men who built extremely close to the water? are and women who almost never cry. But on the whole, women are actually crying faster and more often.

Of course, the most common explanation for this is the different education. In most Western countries, boys are still "strong"? educated and tears are considered unmanly. Girls, on the other hand, are considered more emotional per se and may show feelings more openly. The hormone prolactin already mentioned above also plays a role in significantly lowering the wine inhibition threshold in women.

But there could also be a developmental background: When the man was still a pure hunter, tears might have been life threatening. Those who did not concentrate highly on the hunt but were emotional lived dangerously.A typical headline of the stone-carved newspaper Neanderthal News? could then have read as follows? Man eaten by saber tooth tiger? Tears clouded his eyes.

Another possible reason: women work much more often in social occupations than men. Emotions play an important role here and tears are less taboo in these areas of work. Put simply, geriatric nurses have a reason to cry more often than truck drivers or tilers.

The most recent and especially unsightly explanation involves the fact that women are much more likely to be victims of domestic violence or sexual assault than men. The resulting helplessness and anger often erupts by crying.

Of course, these are all but dry explanations for a very emotional and largely unexplored field of human behavior. Maybe Eric has Clapton with his wonderful song? Tears in Heaven? but also everything important to that?
