Glass bottle & screw jar for hot or cold filling

So far, I have never really thought about it, that there are so many differences with a glass bottle or a glass jar. So far, I have always freed used bottles and screw jars of all kinds from their labels and reused them. As I show it here in my video:

Recently I was in a glassware shop, which also carries packaging materials. My cider now finally has its "ripe state"? achieved and should be filled in 1 liter glass bottles. At the staircase in the Gärballon he has bravely kept.

In the past, I have always used glass bottles of wine or spirits, but the lids became more and more scarce over time. Often they only fit on certain bottles and that annoyed me again and again.

Now I've finally listened to my husband and made me 50 bottles for the self-made, hand-pressed cider. The advantage is that you have the same bottles and closures that fit 100%. If you need a new closure, it is easy to buy. And then these lids will fit 100%, there's nothing running, nothing gets broken, because air comes to it, etc.

Now to my actual report:

The question that came from the seller in this specialist shop was: "What do you need the bottles for? For hot filling or cold filling ?? I was surprised at the question, because I had never heard that there are differences.

It turned out that for the cold filling such as B. cider, special must bottles are. These also have special closures z. B. plastic or clip lock. There are even some that are curved, so the possible gas from the secondary fermentation can escape automatically and certainly no bottle bursts by the overpressure. Such a bottle is only suitable for cold filling and could also shatter at a higher temperature, z. For example, if you would pour boiling hot apple juice. And even the closure would deform under heat and then no longer properly fulfill its purpose. And I do not think plastic closures would be used for boiling juices anyway.

For the hot filling, such as As jam, there are also special glasses and lids. This explains the higher price of such glasses. They withstand high cooking temperatures and do not shatter. The lids are also specially coated. The better this coating, the more expensive these covers. For example, the Twist Off Lid for juice bottles. However, you should always use a new lid when you cook each time according to the seller. Because the coating would dissolve over time, or be soft. How it looks then, you can see at the top of the photo.

If you fill in boiled juices for sale, it makes sense to always use new lids. Used lids, which look as disgusting as the photo, you can expect no one. Sometimes jam, compote is spoiled by such broken lids. It even tastes like metal because the coating has dissolved.

Then there is also special glasses for vinegar, incl. closures and lid. These are geared to high acids, such as. As vinegar or citric acid, as they are often used in pickled sour vegetables, withstands. Did you know all this? Not me. And therefore, I was no longer surprised or annoyed that one or the other Einmachgut was spoiled then? either has changed in color or was tasteless unusable. Even mold can develop there or it begins to ferment.

Unfortunately, even in the specialized trade is not there whether it is suitable for hot or cold. But you can be guided by the fact that you just take must bottles for must. For juice juice bottles and for jam jam jars. Be advised, especially if you want to fill larger quantities, definitely worth it. It would be a pity, to the many work and good ingredients, if you have saved in the wrong place.

So far, I simply thought it was just a marketing strategy to offer as many products in the business. But there's more to it than that and there are so many differences in functionality that most people, like me, do not know at the time. But it is worthwhile to buy suitable glasses and bottles, since you only have to exchange or take the cap. The bottles themselves last years.
