Make coasters from a rope yourself

Anyone who has ever had scratches on metal trimmers on his table will appreciate these glass or pot coasters made of cotton rope. They leave no marks on the table, are very soft, can be washed and are easy to do by yourself. I made them in two variants: one with sewn thick rope and a second knitted version.

Both types can also be easily made by teenagers themselves. In the first version, a cotton rope with a diameter of 8 mm and a length of at least two meters is required for a saucer with the dimensions 13x13 cm. This pad is suitable for the size of coffee cups and small pots. It is important to use twisted and no woven rope. Woven rope can not be moved so smoothly on the side. The end result is then at the edge usually something wrong.

Sewn rope with pompoms

First, a thaw end is wrapped tightly with embroidery thread. This not only serves the look, but ensures that the end of the rope can not continue to rise. The rope is put together like a heating coil and sewn with needle and thread. Wrap the end again with embroidery thread and let the ends last about 1.5 cm. Cut off the rest with scissors. If you do not feel like sewing, you can glue the rope together with hot glue. But it can happen that you see the glue on the bottom. Then the coaster looks a bit ugly from one side.

Knitted rope with eyelet for hanging

The knitted version is knitted with a 5 mm thick cotton rope and knitting needles size 9 on the right. For small coasters (13x13 cm) take eight stitches, knit a row of right stitches and knit back a row of left stitches. This continues until a height of 12 cm is reached. Then bind off the stitches. Cut a 10 cm long and 1.5 cm wide leather strip, pull it at one corner through the edge stitches of the coaster and rivet together with rivets.

The larger coaster has the dimensions 19.5x19.5 cm. 14 stitches are recorded for this format. And, as described above, knit right up to a height of approx. 18 cm. Then bind off the stitches and cut a leather strip with a width of 2 cm and a length of 16 cm. Match the ends together, punch them with the rivet pliers and rivet together again with an eyelet and washer. Alternatively, instead of leather also strips of cloth can be riveted together or only narrow strips of fabric without rivets to be pulled through the edge stitches and sewn.
