Make salt dough & paint: recipe for crafts

For the shop in the nursery can be made from salt dough pastry products such as pretzels, bread, baguette and rolls or fruit and vegetables.

This is much cheaper than the expensive wooden toys and they are not eaten, because small children spit out the salty and hard toy right back. Even if they bite off, that's not dangerous. Here comes the simple recipe:

Salt dough ingredients

  • 150 g of flour (1.5 cups)
  • 50 g starch (½ cup)
  • 100 g salt (1 cup)
  • 100 ml of lukewarm water (1 cup)
  • Some oil

decoration

  • Watercolors (red, yellow, green, orange, brown, black)
  • cloves
  • Yarn or pipe cleaner (green)
  • cocoa

Make salt dough yourself - instructions

For the salt dough, mix 150 g flour and 50 g starch with 100 g salt and 100 g lukewarm water. The flour variety does not matter. Add a few drops of oil and knead a firm dough. If the dough is too dry and crumbly, add a few drops of water with your fingers. Form small round rolls from the plasticine and press in a cross with a knife. Roll a rolling pin for a baguette, flatten it a little and score it with the knife in several places. For dark bread or pretzels, mix some dough with cocoa until it turns dark brown and use it to make small pretzels, bread or three thin dough rolls to make a yeast cake. The dough should be immediately processed and baked, otherwise the small baked goods will crack.

Variations and ideas

Cucumbers, lettuce, cauliflower, peppers, tomatoes, bananas, oranges, apples, pears, lemons and carrots can all be shaped as well. Insert a clove at the bottom of apples and pears and use the stems of the carnations at the top as fruit stalks. Put some green woolen threads or a piece of green pipe cleaner in the top of the carrots but take it out for baking. It's just that there is an opening at the top. After baking, the threads or the pipe cleaner can be glued with glue or the hot glue gun. Place the bread, rolls and fruits and vegetables on a baking sheet covered with baking paper and bake at 50 ° C in the oven for three to four hours. The low temperature is important, otherwise the dough will crack, cracks will occur and the shapes will change.

Paint with watercolors

After baking and cooling, the salt dough can be painted with watercolors. For bread rolls or baguette, paint the cut surfaces of the crosses a little darker. It is best to put the fruits and vegetables on the table while painting or to use pictures from the internet to paint the small bestsellers of the children's supermarket as realistically as possible.
