Make yarn from old t-shirts yourself ~ DIY

The so-called Noodles or Zpagetti yarns are very much in vogue. The cotton yarns are basically a residual product from the textile industry. Large knitting or crochet hooks can be used to make bags, large cushions or rugs. From old T-shirts, the yarn is very easy to make yourself.

To make a t-shirt yarn yourself, all you need is a pile of old t-shirts. Anyone who asks in his circle of acquaintances has quickly collected a lot of material for the production and then we can start. First, the discarded T-shirt is spread on a work surface. The upper part is cut directly under the sleeve. For the production of the yarn I use only the lower part.

cutting technique

From the lower end of the cut-off T-shirt I cut sideways from left to right through the left closed seam about 1.5 to 2 cm long strips. Please do not cut the right seam. On the right side, a 1.5 to 2 cm wide edge must be left standing (see picture). The edge is important so that the yarn remains as a long thread. The width of the strips can be varied as desired. The wider they are, the thicker the yarn becomes.

When the strips are cut, the right side edge is spread out. Here, the fabric must now be cut diagonally so that the long yarn is created. The first strip is cut off. Afterwards a cut is made to the opposite side (see picture). Pull the ribbon a little further apart. The margins roll inwards as they do for Noodles. Unwind the yarn and then start knitting or crocheting.

This is needed:

  • Old T-shirts
  • scissors
