Upcycling: Make a bowl of vinyl record

There are plenty of old vinyl records / records and tips for upcycling as well. I made a bowl from a medium-sized plate in the oven. This is not as easy as it is often said. Therefore my tips about it.

preparation

  • Wash the record in lukewarm water with rinse aid and microfibre cloth, then dry.
  • Paint with acrylic paint, let it dry.
  • Choose a vessel that can tolerate heat, so no plastic! Best ceramic or metal. The bottom should have a diameter as large as the bottom of the shell. At my plate that was 10 cm.
  • Put protective gloves on.

In the oven

  1. The container comes with the bottom up in the oven.
  2. The record is placed so that the plate hole is exactly in the middle. It's best to add a weight of metal or glass on top.
  3. Oven on 75 degrees turn on (never hotter !!!).
  4. The deformation of the plate happens quickly, so watch the process through the oven window!
  5. If the sides fall undulating, turn off the oven, open and remove the molded plate with protective gloves.
  6. Carefully lay on a wooden board. You can shape the edge a bit, but usually everything is fast.
  7. If the shape is completely unattractive, put the plate back into the oven and switch it on. Watch what happens. Often it succeeds then with the forms.

At the end

The hole in the record should be filled. I have taken some Moltofill and after drying a color matching piece of cardboard glued over it.
